COVID-19 and suicide: Evidence from Japan
The Lancet ^ | September 5, 2022 | Matthew J. Spittal

...Yet the evidence to date suggests rising suicide rates have not occurred in most countries. ...The exception to this trend is Japan where suicide rates initially declined by around 14% but then began to rise.3 Suicide rates now appear to be higher in Japan than they were pre-pandemic for many age and sex groups

...youth suicide rates began increasing in April 2020 until a peak in September, and then declined. Rates remained slightly elevated between January and April 2021 (when the study ended). Other analyses presented in the study suggest an increase in suicides of between 50% and 86% between August and November 2020 compared with pre-pandemic trends. The authors identified several factors associated with the increase in suicides including family-related concerns, mental illness, social concerns and academic concerns.

No other country has experienced increases, not just in youth suicides but suicides across a range of age and sex groups, like Japan has.6 This raises interesting and important questions about why Japan is different from other countries? The authors suggest several factors ...One possibility is that returning to school in August may have been an additional stressor for students. Another possibility is that because most young people live in a household with other family members, many were exposed to the stressors experienced by other family members. Finally, the authors suggest that young peoples’ lack of access to their wider social circles – necessary to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 – may have impacted on their mental health because of the role social connections play in buffering against many problems. These are plausible hypotheses but do not explain why youth suicides have not risen in other countries where many of the same factors were in play.

This has already been put to bed.

The US suicide rate declined from 2018 to end of 2019. And 2019 to end of 2020 IT ALSO DECLINED. Amid all the horror of lockdown and wearing masks, suicides declined.

Groping for age groups and finding them just means other age groups had even larger improvements in order to achieve the decline.

Suicides declined in the US in 2020.

Japan . . . is getting smacked very hard right now by the highest Covid deaths they have seen since March 2020. Loosened restrictions are costing a lot of lives there.

Is that your way of saying “trust me, and don’t challenge my data” ?

The data for 2020 suicides was released weeks ago. It says what I said it says. If you don’t think so, I’ll look at your link to it.

Well, I was too restrictive. The lack of travel restrictions seems to have death spiked SKorea.

A link that contradicts a data reference that you haven’t provided? Well that’s not a realistic ask.

Any basic demographics regarding the stats you’re citing?

Ah, a reasonable response.

The CDC tracks suicide and released the 2020 suicide data a few weeks back. I remember they did present/track demographics. I did not know much about it so I was surprised to learn suicides concentrate in the elderly. And men far more often than women.

I do not remember if there was any demographic change to this in 2020. I would have noticed and remembered anything profound like women becoming the majority, or teens replacing 70+ as the majority. There would have been text noting such a thing and I would remember that. It would not be significant regardless because to get overall decline, if one group rose another had to decline even more.
