Cold weather favors the coronavirus. But as summer gives way to fall, infectious-disease experts are guardedly optimistic that the spread of covid-19 this autumn and winter won’t be as brutal as in the previous two years of the pandemic.
Coronavirus scenarios from multiple research teams, shared in recent weeks with federal officials, foresee stable or declining hospitalizations in early fall. The scenarios show the possibility of a late-fall surge. A new variant remains the biggest wild card. But several factors — including the approval this week of reformulated boosters and the buildup of immunity against the latest strain of the virus — could suppress some of the cold-season spread, experts say.
“There’s sort of even odds that we would have some sort of moderate resurgence in the fall. But nothing appears to be projecting anything like an omicron wave,” said Justin Lessler, a University of North Carolina epidemiologist who helps lead the collection of covid-19 planning scenarios from a group of research organizations.
The scenarios assume that reformulated vaccine boosters will be embraced by the public at a rate similar to that of the annual flu shots — possibly an optimistic assumption given that more than half of Americans eligible for boosters have yet to receive their first dose.
Peter Marks, the top vaccine official at the Food and Drug Administration, said in a briefing Wednesday that the approval of reformulated boosters comes as the agency is “looking at a possible fall wave, with a peak around December 1st.”
Predictions about the pandemic rarely age well. In the United States, the pandemic appeared to be winding down in May 2021 amid a vigorous vaccination campaign, only to get wound up again with the rise of the new variants.

Right you are. Fauci and company could have played the whole pandemic thing with a sense of humility. But instead they issued all these wild proclamations. I no longer believe anything they say.
By the way, the same goes with the anti-vaxx folks. They are just as bad. So sadly, there is no one left to trust.
Quite franklly it doesn’t matter if you get the vax or not. In my office of six people five of us got covid despite being vaxxed and boosted. I have haven’t gotten it yet. Our employer will likely require us to get another booster.
I have been sick of this whole thing for a long time and moved on from this.
Dr. Fauci and others decided to manipulate us so everyone will get the shots. But they lost the trust of the American public in doing that. If they were frank with us and explained that it's like the annual flu shot, I think we would have handled it better. And if it was not mandatory but rather encouraged.
Because the original virus no longer exists.
The jab actually makes you more likely to get all kinds of stuff, including “Covid”.
Which makes the push to get double and triple vaxed with a vax that doesn’t even protect from the current variants criminal.
And the vax pushers are wondering why they are losing and have lost all credibility.
Totally clueless.
While they like to portray themselves as the intellectually erudite ones and the rest of the populace who don’t agree with them as ignorant rubes, people can see through lies like that easy enough.
All the hyperventilating over getting vaxed for a mild case of the sniffles is wasted effort. We all know how much we’ve been lied to and there is simply no reason in the world to believe or trust anything we are told about Covid any more.
And they have cried wolf so much, that very few except the covidphobic are even going to pay attention to their breathless hysteria over the “ need” to be vaxed.
Maybe they want to lock us down again, so the democrats can steal another election.
We may see the entire flu world shrink because of all the shots . . . . . each one targeting a common cold variant.

The government hands over to the flu shot promoters millions of tax dollars to make available to the public "free" of charge, a shot that supposedly "safe and effective."
One day we read that there is a "suspected" case of the flu. The next day the headline reads "widespread outbreak."
This is exactly the modus operandi by the government medicine men in the flu hoax. Other illnesses are proclaimed as flu, and deaths are even attributed to it. There is no mass illness of any kind except among those who received the flu shot.
The medicine men are very busy and make lots of money together with their pharmaceutical gurus and the massacre continues for a brief period until people's bodies naturally throw off the medical poisons and return to normal, while many sustain permanent damage.
In Iowa, spokesman from the Department of Public Health says between 800 and 1,000 Iowans die of the flu or pneumonia each year. Most probably is that 99% of them received flu shot.
Vaccines are recommended for those over 65, people whose bodies are already weakened by their condition. These shot may be all that is necessary to push them over the brink.
Every year, we read that the nation's producers of the flu shot "ran out of stock" for what's shaping up to be a nasty flu season, then the shots are in high demand because there is lots of fear out there.
Of course, the shots aren't providing perfect coverage against the strain of virus causing most of the illnesses. This is a loop-hole doctors use if you get the flu after getting a flu shot.
If Republicans will win the House this November 2022, there should also be an investigation into the insane practice of shooting toxins, including all so-called vaccines, from anti HIV, anti HPV, anti hepatitis B, and to this non stop Covid-19 scare for so-called SARS-CoV-2 that can’t be isolated, can’t be purified, never proven to exist being injected in to people and leading them to believe it will "protect" them.

I disagree. I think the flu shot will stay the same for numbers who get it. Covid shots are suspect. The flu shot is a know quantity.
Ike SHOULD have warned about the Biomedical-Pharmaceutical Complex.
The boys at the bio-weapons lab have been hard at work. The only question is which variant to release next.
It’s a known useless quantity now. Irreparable damage has been done to the relationship between people and the medical community.
I think it goes down some, but not too substantially.
The people still wearing masks will take as many shots as they can get…
