Puerto Rico Governor Declares Monkeypox Emergency

Governor Piedro Pierluisi has just declared a state of emergency due to the increase in monkeypox cases in Puerto Rico.

Yesterday, Pierluisi signed Executive Order 2022-044 which orders the Office of Management & Budget, the Department of the Treasury, and the Financial & Fiscal Advisory Authority to make the corresponding arrangements to provide the Department of Health all necessary funding, including access to the Emergency Fund, to address the emergency.

The order went into effect today and will be in force for 30 days.

Up to the middle of this week, 114 confirmed cases, 39 suspected cases, 36 close contacts, and 6 people under investigation were reported on the island.

Some 1,675 people have been vaccinated against monkeypox on the island.

When I was in PR in April, I was amazed that, even though 1. masks were no longer required and 2. It is widely known that Omnicron variants are not stopped by disposable surgical or cloth masks, many if not most people were wearing the worthless things. I was told by my family by marriage that the media in PR was even more sensationalistic about COVID fear porn than in the states and that locals still feared it because of the lack of doctors and hospitals relative to the population. People seems to “conform” to media fear even more than here in the deep blue northeastern US.

I hope that the people on PR don’t now get scared of a disease that is concentrated around promiscuous homosexuals.

I believe you. I follow Puerto Rican news websites and can see from photographs that many people on the island are still wearing masks. It does seem COVID-19 hysteria has been strong there, and it doesn't help that so many healthcare professionals have left for the mainland where el dinero is more abundant.
