” Don’t carry a cell phone. I don’t own one and I get along just fine as I have for decades!”
If I am expecting an important call I don’t have to hang around waiting for it. My phone goes with me!
Last week I had an item for sale on craigslist. Wile I wad out I got a call from a guy saying he would be in the area about 4 PM. I was able to get home by then and sold the item!
Without the cellphone I might have missed the sale.
“Don’t carry a cell phone. I don’t own one and I get along just fine as I have for decades!”
I remember the old days. Drive for miles looking for a phone booth only to find the book missing or phone not working or not enough change to make the operator assisted call.
Try even finding a phone booth now!
“I don’t own one and I get along just fine as I have for decades!”
You are five miles from nowhere and are alone and get hurt.
I call 911. What do you do?
I was waiting in line for my car’s emissions test and I got a notification from the Yellow Pages app: “Will your vehicle pass the Indiana emissions test? Make an appointment with an auto service professional today.”
If you haven’t carried one for decades, then you probably never carried one. I only got my first in 2001.
Why did I get one? Because I was on the road and needed to get ahold of someone and there were no payphones to be found. The culture has shifted to cell phones and landlines are disappearing.
I am guessing you are retired. Professionally I have been expected to be on-call 24/7 as a condition of employment for most of the last 2 decades. Businesses everywhere cannot succeed without convenient, instant communication. It is a pain, but it is the world we live in.
If you don’t have to carry one, good for you. But as a society we still need to work out the implications of these devices because not having one is not an option for the vast majority.
My father owned a basic cell phone but he never turned it on.
When I asked him why he said he didn’t want to be bothered by phone calls. 😃

Cellphones have a “Do Not Disturb” feature. Only three people can ring me when it is turned on.
“Why did I get one? “
My first cellphone was a “gift” from my wife! She told me I better answer when she called.
“If you don’t have to carry one, good for you. “
Nobody has to carry one but it could save your life.
I do have to carry one as a condition of employment. If I decide to be unemployed then I get a decision on carrying the cell phone.
There is also the social obligation aspect. If someone chooses not to have a cell phone then friends and family have a hard time communicating since they depend on it. We also haven’t had a landline in years since it became more expensive and less useful than the cellular family plan.
It’s a pain, but turn ‘Location’ settings to ‘off’, and set a default location value in all of your apps that ask for location. Turn location off while in your car, until you actually need a map. If you have a ‘smart’ car, its software will get a location from nearby cell towers.
“There is also the social obligation aspect.”
Yep!

In this day and age, when you leave home it’s silly not to carry a means of communicating in an emergency because it might make the difference between your’s or someone else’s survival. And if you CCW, you should carry one because if you shoot someone (or use your firearm in self-defense), it’s a best practice for you to be the one to report the incident to police (goes to establishing your position as the vic, not the perp).
I carry a $30 flip phone with a removable battery. When I leave the house I remove the battery and put both inside of a waterproof bag. So it takes me about half a minute to put it into operation but until I insert the battery it’s about a trackable as a Zippo lighter.
As far as my cellular provider knows, I haven’t left the house in years.
“As far as my cellular provider knows, I haven’t left the house in years.”
Yes, but they know when you are home!
” Don’t carry a cell phone. I don’t own one and I get along just fine as I have for decades!”
I used the phone to get price-matching at stores. Money saved.
” Don’t carry a cell phone. I don’t own one and I get along just fine as I have for decades!”
I stream music to my car stereo.
” Don’t carry a cell phone. I don’t own one and I get along just fine as I have for decades!”.
Sometimes after I leave the house I wonder did I close the garage door.
I grab my phone and check. If I did leave it open I can close it from my phone.
I assume that’s how they got the info for 2000 mules.
