he UK's biggest warship has broken down off the south coast shortly after setting sail on what had been billed as a "landmark mission" to the United States.
HMS Prince of Wales, the second of the Royal Navy's two aircraft carriers, was experiencing an "emerging mechanical issue", a spokesperson said. The problem is being investigated.
The £3bn carrier, which became fully operational only last year, is reportedly anchored south east of the Isle of Wight while the investigation is carried out.
"HMS Prince of Wales remains in the South Coast Exercise Area while conducting investigations into an emerging mechanical issue," the Royal Navy spokesperson said.

The UK is a second rate war power but they still think it is the 1750s.
That’s what the UK gets by sending a warship against the US. Our navy will repel however many they send.
“The UK is a second rate war power but they still think it is the 1750s.”
No, they are a third rate power and are trying to get back to second rate. The numerous spoken threats from European politicians during the Brexit process has informed the Brits that they need a decent military again.
I will say I like how they’re leveraging the spin-up of Ukrainian forces to train their own forces and to update British weaponry. I have to give them credit for trying.
But I agree with you in spirit that we’ll never ever have to worry about a British Empire again.
Warships will be useless in a major war now because of satellites and GPS. They are sitting ducks. They won’t be able to hide.
But there is another problem. In the old days they were constructed with simple electrical and mechanical technology. So if there was a problem then they could be patched up and made to go. These days if the electronics go down then you can have a real problem. There may be no fast fix available.
All hands, man your battle stations on the USS Constitution
Maybe it runs on a solar generator and it was a cloudy day.
“Warships will be useless in a major war “
Most everything will be useless.
I’m betting not a sail was set or seen on the eve of departure.
Worth a chuckle, but the UK has proven to be one of our staunchest allies in the post WWII world.
Silly me. And here I thought battle ships had redundant systems so that a single, or even a double fault in any system would render the ship helpless
The Destroyer I served on broke down less than a half mile from the dry docks we had just spent a year in and had to be towed back. The captain was kinda upset.
What was the cause?
Call one of those boat towtrucks and check your insurance and warranty to see if you are covered. Boat driver probably really hacked off.
Wow, first the HMS Duke and Duchess of Sussex founder on the Cali coastline!
Now this!

I was reading a controversial book about the events that led to Pearl Harbor. Churchill and Roosevelt had a secret meeting off the coast of Canada and Churchill wanted the US to enter the war. All Roosevelt did for a full 20 minutes was yell at Churchill for his idiotic notion that the so-called British empire was still an “empire” when clearly it is not. The words were “all you did was enslave people, not empower them”.
Climate change is to blame.
