Its located 75 miles away from the downtown Indianapolis hotel where the men were supposed to be staying. Hard to believe they were driving 150 miles per day to train.

I smell PC at work here. Likely they weren’t warned about a certain urban element. They were probably flashing money around in bars and were followed back to their hotel. I don’t buy the drug deal idea.
I think that was a ROBIN SAGE exercise. Normally the local LEOs are in on the exercise, but this deputy was new and when the SF guys pointed empty weapons at him, he responded with live ammo.

We’re fogeys and dinosaurs. We have a censorious attitude towards drug use. Young people - they look at drugs the way we look at alcohol. Do I wish it were otherwise? Sure. But societal mores have changed, and not necessarily for the better.
Having said that, I’ve never been judgmental about drug use. I don’t view it as a moral defect. I think it’s a mistake. The problem with drugs is it can take over your mind and enslave you.
I don’t think these kids are bad people. They’re just young, dumb and all the rest.

They came to train with DEVGRU, 1st SFOD-D, or other elements of JSOC. This happens multiple times a year, all over the country. Mostly they are low key affairs, but sometimes they’re more elaborate:

I spent a long time in the military and met many cocky young fools like you. If you have any wit at all, just watch and pay attention to what you are being told as to who the enemy is. If you are not just an arrogant strutting bully the day may soon come when you will have to make a moral choice; either disobedience of so-called lawful orders or being a willing participant in polie state operations. Think on that if you have the capacity.
Last time I went there was to dine with my family at St Elmo’s. Came out of there and was scared to death getting to the car.
My other fave was Janko’s Little Zagreb in Bloomington. That is surrounded by a different type of critters.
