Apparently FDR wasn’t completely disabled. Although he couldn’t walk without support on each side of his body, he seemingly was functioning quite satisfactorily in other endeavors. He was supposedly in his little “white house” in Warm Springs, Georgia with his long time mistress, Lucy Mercer, at the time of his death. And according to one of his own sons, his White House assistant, Missy LeHand, kept his spirits up while he was conducting America’s affairs.

He actually perfected a kind of shuffle walk with his son or an aide on one side. There are very few motion pictures of this in action, but plenty of still pictures of FDR with one arm around another man’s arm. It looks quite causal, but the other man had to support FDR’s weight (including the heavy braces) with his one arm and look as if he isn’t straining to hold the weight.

FDR could stand at a podium for hours. This is why his last appearance before Congress was so noteworthy.

It is something of a myth that FDR’s condition was a secret. He was the co-founder of the March of Dimes, a charity whose focus at the time was polio, Warm Springs, GA was a polio treatment center, and is why, in 1946 they put his portrait on the dime.
