I read where the German soldiers thought that the Canadians like to inflict unnecessary knife wounds. Canada is a strange place where outsiders might think that their military is weak because the civilian population seems passive. It would be a mistake to think that.

Yes, isn’t that right? I found I was thinking that very same thing the other day. While it’s true that sometimes you have to just go there to find out what something is going to turn into over the long term, do we really need to think through something like “legal assisted suicide”....? Especially if you’re a medical practitioner. “Yes, ah, we need some ideas for...taking care of...our uncle who’s a veteran. He’s really depressed and drinking a lot. Mm-hm. Mm-hm. No, we’ve tried that and he threw it all up. Mm-hm....”
If anyone is thinking about fleeing across the border into Canada as a way to escape the USA’s current set of problems - which are going to get worse before they get better - please think again. We’re stuck here. Ronald Reagan was right when he said once the USA goes down, there won’t be another free place to go.
Even back in the 1990s I knew people with horror stories about socialized medicine - it started to affect my employment in about 2004-2005 with “Romneycare” making it all right to hire offshore work teams to do health-related stuff. Medical transcription was a way to get illegal immigration’s foot into the door because you can transcribe from any location very easily and of course then you start to build up medical knowledge so you can come to the USA and actually work in a medical clinic or hospital!!! :( For pennies on the dollar, of course.
A guy I was acquainted with in 2000/2001 was an illegal immigrant from the UK. He had been living and working in the US for more than 10 years when I met him. He had been put on a waiting list in the UK to have a medical procedure for something that was killing him - and he was in a lot of pain for which he was just getting pain meds. So he got a work visa (while he could still work) and came to the US, saved up his $$ and paid for the procedure out of pocket. Problem solved! (Then he stayed here illegally and badmouthed the crap out of the USA, as well as the nice lady who was letting him live in her house. I’ve known and worked with illegal aliens over the years and it’s amazing how all of them seem to hate America even though it has saved their bacon again and again. And now this cat, if he’s still alive, is getting the socialized medicine that almost killed him in Eng1and. I would bet you $100 that he’s still complaining, too.)
Eventually socialized medicine’s solution for any health problem is going to be the same thing, right? Check some of the stories about the NHS in the UK now, where you have to have cash to pay out bribes to hospital staff if you want to live in an NHS health facility. Boris Johnson had nice things to say about the NHS after he got out of the hospital from having SARS CoV2 probably because if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have emerged alive and he knew it.

There is a lot of wisdom in what you say. We are now starting to see the ruin associated with legalizing drugs, including pot.
Haha, this is sort of unrelated, but - there is a big difference between the way medical or mental health folks treat a potential client, i.e., someone asking for help, that is based on your, ah, let’s say demographics. If I try to get mental health services, unless I have some serious financing, I won’t be treated as someone who deserves to live, much less get the help that is being requested because of my politics. (I’m not in the military but I can imagine how much worse it is for them.)
Like, a good example is: Did you ever watch that TV series “Criminal Minds”....? I used to watch it when we had nfx some years ago. Every time the psych forensic people who are the main characters go to interview some creepy serial killer, they’re almost always nice to him. I realize this is a technique to get the subject to warm up to one - and a lot of the time they are interviewing someone who’s already charged with a crime and in custody - but they’ll be talking to a guy who has raped, mutilated, and killed a bunch of gals, let’s say, and they’re calling him “Mr So-and-So” and smiling at him, all in the name of getting him to talk.
But if the subject is a white guy, especially a tough-talking male who’s associated with survivalism or a gang, they will get all tough back and get sort of insulting and provocative.
I realized that’s how cops always talk to me - and if I’m asking them for help, they will (in a belligerant, angry tone of voice) tell me to go to mental health. Where the mental health person will start off right away talking all tough to me, like, “Now see here, we’re not going to take any sh*t off you, lady!”
I think the dweebs who work in the Canadian version of the VA are taking the same basic tack, where they have little respect or regard for veterans and only care about their desk job, seeing it as a separate thing from the actual client they’re supposed to be serving.
He’s absolutely horrible.
