After setting up a Gmail account in the mid-aughts, Mark, who is in his 40s, came to rely heavily on Google. He synced appointments with his wife on Google Calendar. His Android smartphone camera backed up his photos and videos to the Google cloud. He even had a phone plan with Google Fi.
Two days after taking the photos of his son, Mark’s phone made a blooping notification noise: His account had been disabled because of “harmful content” that was “a severe violation of Google’s policies and might be illegal.” A “learn more” link led to a list of possible reasons, including “child sexual abuse & exploitation.”

I shouldn’t have made the dumbass comment because I’m not your average computer user and have experience with web technologies. It was aimed at a user of google tech really, not aimed at people who can’t install and set up their own similar services.
Like I said, just trying to install a phone or desktop client app isn’t going to do anything for you. It needs a nextcloud server installation to connect to.
I’ve built a bunch of websites, mostly by installing WordPress or similar and installing NextCloud server web app was almost as easy as installing WordPress.
In either case, you have to create a new database on the server first, then upload files and surf to an install file/wizard and then fill in the credentials for database access, create admin user name and password etc.
Once nextcloud web server app is running, then you get the client app to connect to the server/cloud web app by pasting in a special url and signing in with same user name and password.
All of this has taken time to learn here and there over the years. I started out building websites in plain html in the 90s that had no more styling than FR.
I would think one could find non-google services to do most of the same things but you’d have to pay for them. After all, if a service is free, you are the product or your personal data is.
Re: 74 - That’s always possible but I consider it unlikely. I believe that would be caught by developers or security consultants. But I guess they could all be in the scanning as well and compelled or threatened to say nothing.
If Apple rolls out CSAM, I believe they will announce it and let people make their own decision. That’s less apt to be constructed as nefarious than rolling it out clandestinely.
Good luck!
Again, need evidence of that, please.
Don’t mistake this for an advocacy of Google. Both are evil.
When Al Gore was Clinton’s VP he wanted to force all manufacturers to install “cl;ipper chip” logic. I had to fly to Athens wirh an internet sniffer to see that the required clipper clip logic included in the network client was the problem. You may control your Nextcloud system, but what if the government forces your server’s manufacturer to install a similar back door?
I’m of the belief that anything on your phone or computer device is seen and stored on giant government and Google apple et al databases.
They have the technology to do that these days.
And anything you put on the www stays there forever.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve gotten a box to check to give iermission for a app etc to add or delete pictures when all I want to do is something really simple and only for me.
But it’s clear they want access to my whole phone computer tablet abacus etch-a-sketch or whatever.
I never give permission, but I’m sure they do whatever they want anyway.
We are being watched and data taken 24/7/366- even the extra leap year day!
I sent some thong bikini shots from Captiva of my wife in 2010
To get a calendar made
I also put in the assembly a pic of her in the jacuzzi tub hair up covered up with bubble bath suds holding our infant son
Our last maybe one year old or so
No genitalia visible nor her sweater squirrels visible
The company emailed me they were returning that pic with the infant since it violated guidelines
They are fininicky about this and likely fear litigation
Even if over zealous it’s just a finger in the dyke
If you look hard and make effort so I’ve seen looking into cases of notable caught with actual child porn you can find whatever u want
I think the two major porn sites pornhub and xvideo are in super hot water right now for serious violations
“Terms of service for the “free” gmail says they read ALL of your content in emails. “
Yep
Every TOS for everything seems to require that
That’s why they are sooo looong, so you will just agree and move on.
I was suspended from Twitter acouple of weeks ago, for one week.
I had to delete a tweet, all true, abut covid China #CCP and the vaccines.
A few days ago I posted some facts again about vaxxed w/covid carrying a heavy load which sheds and can be dangerous to the unvaxxed.
And was replying to a tweet with more facts.
So now I am removed from twit, FOREVER!
They are getting ready for the election and another lockdown as they are bringing back the plague to help steal more elections.
Oh well...
