Cord-Cutting Explodes as More Americans Watch Streaming over Cable for First Time Ever
Breitbart ^ | August 19,2022 | WARNER TODD HUSTON

Posted on 08/19/2022 2:00:33 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Consumers continue to dump their cable and satellite subscriptions at an accelerated pace as the industry continues to see a fall in earnings across the board and for the first time ever, more people are watching on streaming than on cable.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, earnings are down for the second quarter.

Comcast, Charter, Cox, Altice, DirecTV, Dish, Verizon and Hulu’s live TV, all lost subscribers. Comcast was down a whopping 500,000 subscribers while DirecTV was down 400,000.

Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall add that the 2,256,000 decline on subscribers is the worst fall on record. Cahall also noted that the industry has retracted from its original saturation point seen back in 2015.

“From a peak of more than 100 million in 2015,” Cahall wrote, “pay TV subs are now about 82.5 million, and we estimate penetration to be around 55 percent of TV households, down from a peak of 81 percent.”

Cahall went on to project an even larger drop in 2023 to 6.7 percent while 2024 will likely see a 6.9 percent decline.

The analyst concluded saying that cord-cutting has worse financial consequences for Fox Corp., Paramount Global, and AMC Networks due to their lack of diversity compared to companies such as Comcast and Disney.

Thank God for books.

“I cut the cord on my TV and it blew a breaker!”

Well duh — time for a bigger breaker. Try a 400 amp one.

Only free broadcast TV here, if watched at all. Maybe once or twice a month I’ll see Columbo on the Cozi network. That’s it. I don’t miss watching TV.

Some 20 million less people watching since 2015
10 million in the last 2 years!

Roku lists thousands of channels.
I have a Roku Ultra box to display program apps that are installed from Roku.
https://www.roku.com/how-it-works

What to watch/ Channel Store:
https://channelstore.roku.com/browse

Roku requires you to have an account. Once logged in using your computer.
Click on the + Add channel of the app you want.
Roku communicates with the Roku box.
Your log in for the sites like Youtube & Tubi tv etc. one time.
Easier to do this on a computer at their websites. You can hookup a keyboard and mouse to the USB ports on the pc as well. Using the Roku remote to log in is slow.

To see the new channels on the Roku device:
Using the Roku remote you press the OK button then use the arrow buttons to go to Settings then System then Software Update and then Check now. Press the OK button. Any issues in the future you do this and also System restart.
Under Accessibilty you turn off Captions mode. It turns itself on sometimes.

To arrange the apps you highlight one by using the arrow button then press the * button. You will see options like Move channel and select. Press ok and now use the arrow buttons to move the tile around to where you want it. Press the * again to lock in place.

I have these FREE apps:

Pluto tv app - layout is easy to find tv and movie shows.
Youtube - on your pc go to youtube and find channels you like and Subscribe. They showup on the Youtube app. Need Youtube a log in account like a gmail account or seperate one if you like.

Tubi tv <- needs better layout. Has many of those shows that did not make 100 episodes so not on regular tv anymore. Need log in account.

I have many more but they do not have the programs I look at regularly.

Pay apps:
Prime Video - this is Amazon Prime tv and movies. I have Prime $139 as I buy too much thru Amazon....
Current Amazon Prime membership pricing:
$14.99 per month
$139 per year
Prime Video membership is $8.99 per month

Sling tv. I pay $42 a month for what is cable and many more channels
If they raise the price again I may just drop it. I started out at $25 a month and the last few years they raised the price and it is becoming like cable tv pricing.

I’ve never had cable or satellite and stopped watching TV in 2000. I miss things like the Olympics and the Oscars and presidential debates but I can see sports at Sports bars and the rest at a friends’ house or later on streaming. I watch TV in hotels now and like the cooking channels and the house remodeling. It’s like a rare treat.

I'll have to get Hulu if I want to see The Orville. I really don't want to; I have enough bills already.

We dropped cable 3 years ago. Our TV is sitting in a corner on the floor. I think we turned it on a year ago to make sure it still worked. 😆

>>>>Prime Video membership is $8.99 per month<<<<

Is there a link for this subscription as Amazon does a good job hiding this “prime video only” option?

If carefully chosen, each service provide something unique.

For instance I have Netflix and must keep it. Netflix is very expensive and must change or lose out

I have Acorn and Britbox. Each provides a host of different programing from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. I recently signed up for PBS for certain Masterpiece programs.

We especially like Australian programing

The older programs are very good. The new UK programing features black characters in 18th century positions of prominence that make it just ridiculous. They have jumped off a cliff using negro actors in all sorts of inappropriate roles

Thought I was going to lose watching anything until I discovered Chinese and Korean dramas.

Same with me - I really only watch Asian shows, primarily historical dramas. It's amazing how even most Mainland Chinese shows these days are more moral and far less Communist than anything coming out of Hollywood.

Some people get so many streaming services that they are paying as much as they used to pay for cable, or so I'm told. There's nothing wrong with waiting for something to appear on a free app. Most of what's produced isn't that good, and you may get more out of finding some rarity than you do out of watching what everyone else is watching. We still have DVD (for a while anyway), and there are still movie theaters if you absolutely have to watch Bullet Train or She-Hulk.

The cost to maintain the lifetime-limited satellite constellation for any current DBS system is unsustainable in comparison to the cost of fiber-based, video IP over internet. No question.

You’d have to be an idiot to keep paying up to $150-$200/month for DBS for content you can buy from various sources for much, much less.

I’m not. I have the same content I had over DirectV for less than half of what I was paying. Don’t get fooled into thinking satellite is your best option if you can get at least 20-30 MB internet service at a fair deal.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!! It’s moral and inspiring and puts a high premium on loving family, country and religion. Once, maybe twice if pushing it, I’ve seen anything I’d call propaganda. Their love of their country should echo our love of our country. In the historicals, the best emperors are the ones with the most love of the populace. Trump would fit right in!

I’m currently watching one of the best historicals I’ve ever seen.
