The shooting that killed three people and injured another at a Greenwood, Indiana, mall on July 17 drew broad national attention because of how it ended – when 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, carrying a licensed handgun, fatally shot the attacker.

Guy Relford, Dicken attorney While Dicken was praised for his courage and skill – squeezing off his first shot 15 seconds after the attack began, from a distance of 40 yards – much of the news coverage drew from FBI-approved statistics to assert that armed citizens almost never stop such attackers: “Rare in US for an active shooter to be stopped by bystander” (Associated Press); “Rampage in Indiana a rare instance of armed civilian ending mass shooting” (Washington Post); and “After Indiana mall shooting, one hero but no lasting solution to gun violence” (New York Times).
Evidence compiled by the organization I run, the Crime Prevention Research Center, and others suggest that the FBI undercounts by an order of more than three the number of instances in which armed citizens have thwarted such attacks, saving untold numbers of lives. Although those many news stories about the Greenwood shooting also suggested that the defensive use of guns might endanger others, there is no evidence that these acts have harmed innocent victims.
“So much of our public understanding of this issue is malformed by this single agency,” notes Theo Wold, former acting assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice. "When the Bureau gets it so systematically – and persistently – wrong, the cascading effect is incredibly deleterious. The FBI exerts considerable influence over state and local law enforcement and policymakers at all levels of government.”

Larry Elder has spoken about how often all it takes is a brandishing of a weapon to thwart a robber, rapist or other attack.
He opened up his phone lines once - and the board lit up. Calls were extremely interesting and he asked each caller if he had called the police - the answer, overwhelmingly, was NO.
I had a friend who was involved in a road rage incident, he was sure the perp was going to kill him. He said he took his gun out of the glove compartment and held it against the driver’s side window. The crazed idiot screeched off and that was the end of it. He believed his gun saved his life that day.
The FBI also distorts the number of Black murderers versus the number of white murderers.
The race of a murderer is only posted after someone has been officially charged with murder.
On average, in urban areas, only 40% of Black murders result in a murder prosecution.
On average, more than 80% of white murders result in a murder prosecution.
Those averages completely distort the numerical comparison of Black murderers to white murderers.
In addition, Hispanics who identify as white are classified as white. And, the Census Bureau classifies most North African and Middle East immigrants as white.
If white European American murderers were separated into a distinct group, their murder rate is almost identical to the average murder rate for white Europeans living in Europe - around 1.5 per 100,000.

A crazy driver was trying to run into me.
I dodged him the first time.
He went off into the ditch.
He came up out of the ditch and started coming after me again.
I held my 1911 a1 up so he could see it and jacked a round into the chamber.
I then turned around in my car seat and pointed the weapon at him.

The NRA has a column called “The Armed Citizen.” This is found in the two magazines they publish. There are usually 7 to 12 stories where an armed citizen thwarts an assault on themselves or others. You may say that the NRA is biased or publishes false stories, but they print their sources, which are usually newspapers reporting on local news.
