The governing body of the ALGOP voted Saturday to approve a resolution calling for the Legislature to require voters to register with a party before they can vote in that party's primary.
The resolution passed with 81% of the vote.
The vote after an eventful primary season, which saw close calls and ballot errors. The vote does not bind the House and Senate, and the party left the details to the Legislature to figure out.
"The direct implementation would be left to the legislation," said John Wahl, chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.
Alabama is one of 15 states with an "open primary," which allows supporters of one party to vote in another party's primary. Crossover voting here hasn't been quantified because voters do not declare a party affiliation when they register.
The Republicans have won supermajorities in the state Legislature since 2010 and in every statewide elected office.

It’s about time. All conservative states need to do the same. Also, these wishy-washy GOPe members need to be voted out and true conservatives need to replace them. Only then will we make any progress. I’m tired of the “go-along-to-get -along” squishes.

I'm sure Democrats still want open primaries so that they can have influence over the Republican's pick. The sad and surprising part is that there were/are enough RINOs to fall for it.

In reply 2 I said, "I don’t understand why there would ever be a closed primary." Correct me if I'm wrong but a closed primary is one where only registered members of the party can vote, right? So only Republicans can vote in Republican primaries and only Democrats can vote in Democrat primaries and non-affiliated voters are out of luck.

So when Alabama now says they want closed primaries my immediate reaction was pretty much, "Duh, why wouldn't you have a closed primary to begin with?" Or in other words "I don’t understand why there would ever be a closed primary." So I'm coming down in support of the question of closed primaries, not open primaries. Just what the heck you're talking about is unclear.

I've been known to mangle syntax from time to time. Maybe it's just a new concept for me.
Maybe we should do away with primaries altogether and just have a wide open general election.
I sometimes think it would be better to go back to state conventions to pick the candidates for the general. Yes, it can give power to the ‘Old Bulls’. That means you have to work to undermine and replace from the precinct level up. If people aren't willing to replace these 'Old Bull ' hacks in either system every so often then you get what your laziness deserves!
Tennessee has been using the ‘open primary’ system to cripple conservative candidates for YEARS...that is how a conservative state winds up electing weak and moderate candidates every election cycle.

Good move. Open primaries give us the likes of Lindsey Graham, John Cornyn and Roger Wicker. As a poll worker I have seen known 🐀s in my precinct crossover and elect RINOs.

I lived in Massachusetts for 21 years. They also have open primaries. Anyone can walk into the polling place and request either a Republican or Democrat ballot.
Since there is a large majority of registered Democrats, they would show up to vote, request a Republican ballot, and vote for whoever they thought was easiest to beat in the general election.
PS: Republicans also did the same thing to the Democrats, but they don’t have the numbers to make a difference.

How many races has Mitch screwed up for you? He played in Georgia. He hated Doug Collins and helped bring Loeffler to Kemp to replace Isickson because Mitch wanted a woman. That split the ticket and we got Warnock. He has more power when the Senate is evenly split.
The problem with the GOP is not open primaries. The problem is with the people running the GOP.
Study this and let me know why you want Mitch to have more power.
My mother was abused by my step father when I was a kid. It was hard for her to leave her abuser too. That is what the GOP is doing to their voters.
