State GOP approves resolution calling for closed primaries in Alabama

The governing body of the ALGOP voted Saturday to approve a resolution calling for the Legislature to require voters to register with a party before they can vote in that party's primary.

The resolution passed with 81% of the vote.

The vote after an eventful primary season, which saw close calls and ballot errors. The vote does not bind the House and Senate, and the party left the details to the Legislature to figure out.

"The direct implementation would be left to the legislation," said John Wahl, chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.

Alabama is one of 15 states with an "open primary," which allows supporters of one party to vote in another party's primary. Crossover voting here hasn't been quantified because voters do not declare a party affiliation when they register.

The Republicans have won supermajorities in the state Legislature since 2010 and in every statewide elected office.

This isn't rocket science. Party members should choose their candidates for office, disallowing infiltrators.

But the pantywaist wing of the GOP always liked allowing democrats to vote for republicans, to water down the conservative electorate.

Those days are slowly coming to an end.

I don’t understand why there would ever be a closed primary.

Primaries should be closed. Each party is selecting their candidates for the election. We need an electoral college on the precinct level.

So Democrats cannot cross over and vote for a poor Republican choice.

Sure. Let's make the party bosses stronger. You may hate crossover voters. But, this only makes the party's leaders even stronger gatekeepers.

I looked at the Georgia elections and the crossover votes were negligible. Start by looking at the down-ticket statewide races. Crossover voters do not vote for PSC seats, state Agriculture commissioners, etc. If the numbers are consistent with the top-of-the-ticket votes then you can get an idea of how many there were.

Do you like Mitch McConnell, much? Closed primaries will give people like him even more power with the state parties. Consider KY.

Help me understand how I may be wrong, please.

Nonsense!

Help me understand how I may be wrong, please.

How the heck does allowing far left Democrats to vote in Republican primaries not do great damage to conservative Republican candidates?

Open primaries may take some power from the party, but it gives it to the opposite party. That’s not limiting power, that’s transferring it to the enemy. The goal of open primaries is either to force in moderate candidates, or to sabotage the other party with bad nadidates (e.g. operation chaos). Terrible idea either way.

It’s best not to allow the opposition party to choose your candidate.

After all this time, I’m still amazed that someone somewhere once thought open primaries were a good idea, and especially that other people said, “Fantastic! Let’s do it!”

Are you a Democrat or a troll or both?

Neither. If you are going to have a political primary I don't understand how you don't keep it to your own party is all. I find it puzzling to say the least.

Because its a REPUBLICAN PRIMARY.
Can you get that into your head?
We don't want far left Dem crazies deciding OUR primaries.

These are the same dimwits who would take the exact same stance to Ranked Choice Voting (RCV)

Both concepts are Leftist in origin and tied to propagating The Deep State.

So just so I’m clear, you are in favor of open primaries? Which, if I understand correctly, are primaries where anyone can vote?

You either can't read or you don't understand English.
In reality, you are a hard core annoying little Dem troll.
Off back to DU with you.
Just concentrate on voting in your Dem primaries and stay the heck away from Republican primaries.
