Over 100,000 Mariupol residents trapped in dire conditions under Russian occupation

Three months after Russia’s brutal months-long siege of Mariupol came to an end, life hangs by a thread for those who stayed behind.

Russian airstrikes and artillery pounded Mariupol, reducing what was once a vibrant port city into a landscape of rubble. More than 20,000 people are believed to have been killed in Russia’s siege but the real number could be much higher, according to the Mariupol City Council.

There are mass graves with unidentified bodies outside of the city. Though incessant shelling ceased after the last Ukrainian stronghold in Mariupol fell to Russia in mid-May, those who survived the siege are facing new challenges amid a shortage of everyday necessities such as food and clean water.

Living conditions are dire. On average, some 25 people are dying each day in the occupied city, Petro Andriushchenko, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, told the Kyiv Independent.

Andriushchenko said the city council could not establish one particular cause of death that the population is most vulnerable to because “everything is difficult.” Only about 40% of the remaining residents have access to electricity and running water, and a majority are still cut off from gas even as winter approaches, according to the official.

About 90% of the civilian housing stock has been destroyed or damaged by the Russian Artillery barrages, which targeted virtually all civilian areas of the city.

Essential services like water, electricity and gas for heating were all extensively deliberately targeted, in a huge systematic violation of the Geneva and Hague Conventions.

From around 430,000 just a few months ago, roughly only about 100,000 remain.

There is basically no functioning economy, or employment opportunities. Bodies of the dead have still not been completely recovered, and have been contaminating the remaining water supply, contributing to a cholera problem.

Pretty STUPID of the Neocons to cause Mariupol to get trashed.

THANK GOD the leaders of Paris and Rome didn’t have the same attitude in WW2.

Neocons didn’t make Russia invade and violate all the laws of war - the Ukrainians dressed provocatively, which forced Putin to do it.

In any case, Putin is not responsible for what he did.

The Russians bragged about restoring infrastructure in Mariupol. First on the agenda was changing signage from Ukrainian to Russian. That helped a lot. They also changed the name of Liberty Plaza to Lenin Plaza just to rub Ukrainian noses in sewage.

In separate news, Officials in the self-declared Luhansk People’s Republic are considering not rebuilding the city of Popasna, which is on territory that they control. “There wouldn’t really be a point. The city is truly almost completely destroyed,” said “LNR” head Leonid Pasechik. While a final decision has not yet been made, he said, the Russian-backed administration is “leaning towards” leaving the town as it is and relocating its residents.

Russian troops first occupied Popasna on May 9. Pasechnik reported previously that 96 percent of the town’s buildings and structures were damaged.

There is a pattern emerging...

A defending nation is not the start of the conflict.

The nation that invades is the start of the conflict.

If you are asking Russia to withdraw to its border, then
you are not a neocon. If you are not, you are.

Defensive nations supporters cannot be called neocons,
legitimately.

I wouldn’t surrender our nation if attacked. They won’t
either.

It’s side splittingly funny when Putin supporter try to
call Ukraine supporter neocons?

I didn’t support this war starting. I do support the
invaded nation when it defends itself.

It wasn’t Ukrainian adventurism that started this war.

It was Russian adventurism. Support of that is what a
neocon would do, a Russian supporting neocon.
