Six Flags sheds nearly two million customers in the last year and shares tumble 18% as park overhauls target market and stocks plummet: CEO sounds OFF, saying, 'We became a cheap day care center for teenagers'

A shocking year at Six Flags ends in the loss of nearly two million customers and a collapse in stock value.

The world's largest theme park operator reported the loss in attendance following the implementation of an initiative to lessen the presence of 'rowdy teenagers' in their parks, according to the company's CEO Selim Bassoul.

The Texas-based theme park's shares tumbled 18% to $21.12 Thursday after it disclosed attendance at its 27 parks was down 22% from this time last year, which is wildly different when compared to Disney's reported 70% rise in park attendance year-over-year.

Bassoul, who was named CEO in 2021, blamed the drop partly on price hikes for admission in response to dishing out too many discounts last year.

'So, we only got the discounter or we became a day care center for teenagers,' and 'it was a cheap day care center for teenagers,' he said.

Too many rowdy teens and gangs Lines too long Too many roller coasters - not enough variety in the rides Popular rides always broken or not operating for some reason Crummy food and drink Bad customer service - park workers are surly and unhelpful Parks not maintained - unkempt and trashy

“teens” kept a lot of ‘suburban’ families away, families who would have spent a lot of money.

I know some people who live in the Washington DC area. They do not go to Six Flags America, because they say it draws a pretty rough crowd.

If there is a bad element the dominates public places, whether it’s a theme park or a shopping mall, the bad element tends to drive out the decent people, and or, paying customers.

They stated....”we became a day care center for teenagers”....

Oh absolutely....like when they gathered at malls. They will always find a place they can be away from parents supervision.

We did that. It was usually miles out of town, in the woods or dunes.

Didn’t they ditch the “six flags” a few years ago, and now just have one?

I have nothing but fond memories of Six Flags and I heartily encourage people to attend.

Well, the important thing is Six Flags got rid of that bad Confederate flag.

The last time I went to Six Flags in Atlanta was in the 80’s and it looked like they were filming 7 Tarzan movies all at once.

What happens is that a one-day ticket is $45, while a season pass is $117. So you have people getting a season pass and turning the park into a day care for their “teens”, as the article notes.

I read at one point that most of the “problems” were teens on season pass. If they GOT RID of season passes, and reduced the day ticket a bit, then they would keep away most of the rowdy “teens”, and attract some of the suburban families again.

They also need to deal with the surly employees. I will suspect that many of them are from the same demographic as the “rowdy teens”, and their presence drives away suburban teens who might want to work there.

Vegas isn’t my cup of tea, but the Strip used to have some charm.

Was there last October for a show, and the Strip smelled of nothing but weed, with shirtless addicts laying on the ground and assorted riffraff.

It was gross. Just the weed smell alone was overwhelming. Truly a disgusting place.
