Zaporizhzhia: Real risk of nuclear disaster in Ukraine - watchdog

The UN's nuclear watchdog has called for an immediate end to any military action near Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, warning of a "very real risk of a nuclear disaster".

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said he was "extremely concerned" by reports of shelling at Europe's largest nuclear power plant.

It comes as Ukraine said parts of the facility were "seriously damaged" by Russian military strikes.

Russia seized the plant in March.

Russia has kept on its Ukrainian employees, but Kyiv accuses Russian forces of firing rockets at civilian areas from the site, employing "terror tactics".

Friday's strikes underline "the very real risk of a nuclear disaster that could threaten public health and the environment in Ukraine and beyond", Mr Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said, in a statement.

"Any military firepower directed at, or from, the facility would amount to playing with fire, with potentially catastrophic consequences," he added.

Ukrainian staff must be able to carry out their important duties "without threats or pressure", he said, adding that the IAEA should be allowed to provide technical support.

"For the sake of protecting people in Ukraine and elsewhere from a potential nuclear accident, we must all set aside our differences and act, now. The IAEA is ready," said Mr Grossi, days after stating the plant was "completely out of control".

The operator of the Zaporizhzhia plant said the Russian missile strikes had forced the closure of one "power unit", adding that there was a risk of radioactive leaks.

The strikes "caused a serious risk for the safe operation of the plant", operator Enerhoatom wrote on Telegram.

Moscow said Ukraine carried out the attack.

The BBC was unable to verify the reported damage at the nuclear plant.

The Russians are trying to re-route all the electricity to Russia. The Ukrainians are trying to destroy the transmission towers. The plant itself is at no risk. They both want it intact.

Destroying transmission towers may be a risk. Nuclear plants don’t like to have their load suddenly drop to zero.

That’s BS because the missiles are falling close to the spent rods storage and managed to damage the reactor cooling system.
Based on the speculations in the Ukrainian media, there is an ultimatum by Ze that there shouldn’t be vote for secession on the newly liberated areas or they are going to make them uninhabitable. Based on the position of the US UN representative, the position is supported by the US.
So much for Russia as a state sponsor on terrorism and Ukrainian democracy.

LOL. Sure. Ukraine wants to nuke itself. And get back to me when Zelinsky or anybody else is dictator of Ukraine for 20+ years as Putin has been of one party fascist state Russia.

Yes, it wants. How do you logically explain the “Russian” strikes on the NPP under Russian control?

That’s in combination with the Ukrainian propaganda stating that the Russians are using the station to hold weapons, making it a legitimate target for Ukrainian strikes?

The last cocaine-influenced Zelensky’s comment is simply priceless. He claimed the Russian strikes on the plant and then demanded Russia to hand the plant back. Can it get any more stupid?

How do you “logically” explain Russia raising to the ground cities it wants to “liberate?” You can’t. That’s just destruction and murder in the classic Russian way. Certainly not liberation.

The Russian people seem to be enjoying destroying Ukraine one village at a time. I doubt you’ll think its such a “limited operation” after the EU pulls Russian tourists visas. You’ll be forced to vacation in Norilsk and Chelyabinsk since I see Crimea is a bit “hot” these days. Cheers.

I like how you are always switching topics once out of arguments to back your lies.
Enjoy glowing in the dark in Poland! Blaming Putin for the actions of your proxies is going to sweeten the pill:)
