Plans To Dig the Biggest Lithium Mine in the US Face Mounting Opposition

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Nevada—Deep below the tangled roots of the old-growth sagebrush of Thacker Pass, in an extinct super-volcano, lies one of the world’s largest deposits of lithium—a key element for the transition to clean energy. But above ground, a cluster of tents has risen in the Northern Nevada desert where, for eight months, environmental and tribal activists are protesting plans to mine it for “green” technologies.

“We are not leaving until this project is canceled,” said Max Wilbert, of the Protect Thacker Pass campaign. “If need be, this will come down to direct action. We mean to put ourselves in between the machines and this place.”

Plans to dig for the element known as “white gold” have encountered a surge of resistance from tribes, ranchers, residents and activists who say they believe the repercussions of the mine will outweigh the lithium’s contributions to the nation’s transition to less-polluting energy sources than fossil fuels.

This is Priceless.

A group of Environmental Activists is protesting AGAINST the mine because it will destroy the environment. And another group of Environmental Activists WANTS the mine because Fossil Fuels are destroying the environment and Lithium and Green Energy is the savior of the Environment.

Environmental Activist = RETARD !!!!

Because “clean energy” is all about massive strip-mining operations.

The argument is sound......................

So torn on this one.
I support mining and the Lithium needs to come from somewhere domestically instead of China.
I despise Greenie carpetbaggers.
Nearly all of the “Protestors” (Who is paying them, China?) are from outside this state.

But I also loath the effort to cram EV’s down our throats.

They want us to be dependent on other countries for all forms of energy and any basic need.

...Despite its name, and the fact that it is also developing a lithium mine in Argentina, Lithium Americas’ majority stakeholder is China’s Ganfeng Lithium the world’s largest producer of the element.

Why am I not surprised?

So much for the endangered polka-dotted flat-head fish-eyed jack-lizard--or whatever-- enviro crises beats the environment every time.

The amount of earth that must be moved and processed to yield one pound of lithium exceeds the total volume of a typical Appalachian mountain. Each electric vehicle requires about 1 lb of lithium in its lifetime. 1 mountain per car is the cost in environmental destruction.

"So torn on this one."

Me too. I'm for energy diversification, mainly for my family. (My wife and I have both an ICE car and an EV so that if the Dim control freaks mess up one energy source we have at least one car based on another energy source.) So I'm for a free market of both oil supply and electrical supply (including electrical storage like lithium batteries). I'm also for energy independence as a nation (as you alluded to hating our lithium coming solely from China).

And like you I can't stand the forcing of EV's onto us.
