Exclusive: Russia starts stripping jetliners for parts as sanctions bite
Reuters ^ | 08-AUG-2022 | Reuters

Russian airlines, including state-controlled Aeroflot (AFLT.MM), are stripping jetliners to secure spare parts they can no longer buy abroad because of Western sanctions, four industry sources told Reuters.

The steps are in line with advice Russia's government provided in June for airlines to use some aircraft for parts to ensure the remainder of foreign-built planes can continue flying at least through 2025.

"Russian-assembled Sukhoi Superjets are also heavily dependent on foreign parts. An engine has already been removed from one Superjet to allow another Superjet to continue flying, the first source said."

"Within a year of the sanctions coming into effect, it will be a "challenge" to keep modern jets in service even for Russia's highly developed and competent engineering base, Western sources have said."

And yet, through all the US/EU/Western media propaganda steadily perpetuated, US is goes into recession and inflation about to go through the roof, virtually of of Europe is languishing from lack of energy to the point of rationing while their economies are about to implode. None of which is occurring in Russia to any remote sense as it is occurring in the US and Western Europe.

Sanctions failed, and failed miserably to the extent that they have utterly backfired on the US and Western Europe. PutinIdiot laughs his ass off. Bet.

If the US and the West are collapsing, it must warm the cockles of your heart.

The Russians could make toilets for themselves with some of those parts, if they tried.

Thing is Russia seized airplanes owned by and leased from companies in the European Union. The Union’s boycott meant that these planes can never be used outside of Russia because internationally recognized airworthiness certificates have been nullified as well as the fact that genuine spare parts can no longer be sent to Russia. So planes have to be sacrificed to supply spare parts to keep other planes flying.

No matter what else happens, Russia’s international civil aviation industry is going to have very rough going in the years to come.

Why don’t they just buy parts from China? They’ll make anything you want.

Hate to say this but our US supplier was charging about $4 for a part. We just received a quote from a Chinese vendor for $0.83 for the same.

Let’s just hope there’s no war.

Long term they probably will.

Maybe the stuff has to be reverse-engineered and tooled up.

And I've heard their metallurgy on some of the critical items isn't up to par.

Well, we’ve made some mistakes, no doubt about it. But, I’m old school: I will stand with my country to the end.

I find this hard to believe, except in a short term.

I had a friend who made his fortune in aircraft parts, and who worked part-time for the FBI in locating the sources of counterfeit aircraft parts.

He said it's amazing what one guy in a machine shop can produce. The parts he found would look and function exactly like the real thing - at least for a while. It's just that they weren't made of the high-quality materials of the real FAA approved parts so they would fail after a short time.

I'm sure the Russians could copy most of the parts themselves and use materials of the quality of their choosing.
