The Rise of Wokeness in the Military
Hillsdale College-Imprimus ^ | Juny/July 2022 | Thomas Spoehr

Complaints by veteran soldiers about younger generations who lack discipline and traditional values are as old as war itself. Grizzled veterans in the Greek phalanx, Roman legions, and Napoleon’s elite corps all believed that the failings of the young would be the ruin of their armies. This is not the chief worry of grizzled American veterans today. The largest threat they see by far to our current military is the weakening of its fabric by radical progressive (or “woke”) policies being imposed, not by a rising generation of slackers, but by the very leaders charged with ensuring their readiness.

Wokeness in the military is being imposed by elected and appointed leaders in the White House, Congress, and the Pentagon who have little understanding of the purpose, character, traditions, and requirements of the institution they are trying to change. The push for it didn’t begin in the last two years under the Biden administration—nor will it automatically end if a non-woke administration is elected in 2024. Wokeness in the military has become ingrained. And unless the policies that flow from it are illegal or directly jeopardize readiness, senior military leaders have little alternative but to comply.

Woke ideology undermines military readiness in various ways. It undermines cohesiveness by emphasizing differences based on race, ethnicity, and sex. It undermines leadership authority by introducing questions about whether promotion is based on merit or quota requirements. It leads to military personnel serving in specialties and areas for which they are not qualified or ready. And it takes time and resources away from training activities and weapons development that contribute to readiness.

Wokeness in the military also affects relations between the military and society at large. It acts as a disincentive for many young Americans in terms of enlistment.

The way it looks to me is that the enemy, whomever that will be, will roll right over us. Thank God for rednecks and partisans.

Ive become pretty radical on what has happened to the military and specifically the US Navy that I so proudly served. This can be traced all the way back to Patricia Schroeder and her feminist need to see women serving in the military, no matter the cost.
I had the pleasure of serving out at see with an all male crew. I thank god we didn’t have any women serving with us then because since i got off my ship in 93 shipmates that i kept in touch with kept me up to date on what a cluster F its been since. Feminism and Wokeness will destroy our military and ultimately our country. The only thing that will bring us back from this precipice will be civil war and/or china attacking us. We will eventually be slapped with the folly of allowing women to serve in combat roles.

The U.S. was never designed to have a large standing military. The top-down bureaucracy required for such a monstrosity to function is the antithesis of what this country was supposed to be all about.

In many respects, the defense budget has become essentially “middle class welfare”.
Both the employment of military personnel, and the equipment that sustains it.

Yes. How true that is. Hope all is well with you, AW.

Things seem to becoming a bit unwound these days.

My son just enlisted in the Navy about 10 months ago, and he’s seeing it too. Me, I got about 7 months until I reach my 30 years of combined military/federal service, then I’m out.

Yes. This weaponization of the organs of government against their political opponents and the citizenry.

This intentional destruction of the Energy sector.

This new bill which doubles the IRS budget and hires 87,000 new IRS agents. Half of that $11 billion additional budget a year for enforcement.

The raid on Trump’s home.

They are clearly coming for us.

I will pray.
