Having Republicans choose between being the “Party of Lincoln” or the “Party of Reagan” can be like asking a parent to pick a favorite child, unless the topic is strictly economics.
The “new right” and the “free-market conservatives” are at war centered on their economic policy divide, forcing members of the Republican Party to choose a side: common good conservatism or free-market fundamentalists.

“common good conservatism” ??
Made up term equaling “Globalist Communism”
Totally incompatible with the very fabric of the USA.
Absent of any of the essence of the founding of our nation.
Absence of any reverence of God.
The very worst type of Totalitarianism.
Free markets don’t include foreign communist nations with slave labor and higher tariffs against U.S. products. Traitors.
“free market conservatives” seem to think ONLY of free trade deals, while the NEW RIGHT CONSERVATIVES concentrate on ALL things.
There are no “free-market fundamentalists” in the GOP anymore. There probably never were any of consequence. The only reason Trump’s brand of populist nationalism ever got any traction in the Republican Party at all is that the GOP spent the first decade of the 20th century exposing its “free-market fundamentalism” as a complete fraud. The entire Bush administration was characterized by a massive growth of government, trillions of dollars spent on stupid wars that only served to enrich global corporations and foreign interests, and the pernicious growth of an intrusive police state here at home. There is nothing “free marker” about any of this sh!t.
Trump rose to prominence simply by pointing this out.
If you go to the term “common good conservatism”
You get an article by Joshua Hammer (I’ve never heard of him)
Joshua Ives Hammer (born June 12, 1957) is an American content creator and foreign freelance correspondent [1] and bureau chief[2] for Newsweek and in Europe. While at Newsweek he was the Nairobi Bureau Chief from 1993 to 1996, the South American Bureau Chief from 1996–1997, the Los Angeles Bureau Chief from 1997–2001, the Berlin Bureau Chief from 2000–2001, and the Jerusalem Bureau Chief.[3] His articles have appeared in such publications as The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker and Smithsonian.[4][5]

I think you’ve got the roles reversed. I haven’t read the article but it seems the writer is using “common good conservatism” to mean Trumpian trade nationalism that prioritizes what’s good for American workers and industries. This is opposite of the free market fundamentalists, aka the Paul Ryan internationalist free trader types.
Daily Caller has gone “all paywall, all the time” and that irks me. It’s cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Time for RINOs who just give in to all democrat party demands to switch parties and become democrats.
He’s exposed more than that. The democrats now admit they’re for abortion on demand…
Once the Republican Deceivers put faces (Pence, McConnell, McCarthy) to fuzzy concepts (RINOism), their politics attract app. 5% of the voting public.
I think you meant 21st century, though the split between Taft and Teddy was an interesting one as well, and may have presaged the present split.
What about the eastern liberal establishment? The Rockefeller wing of the party against the Goldwater wing of the party. Goldwater leading to Reagan and Reagan leading to Trump.
All modern trade comes with strings attached. Politicians pretend otherwise to continue the flow of palm grease from various entities around the world.
For instance:
Paul Ryan, BARF.
I don’t see Paul Ryan as an internationalist free trader. He is a Globalist political hack. He has betrayed the nation for many many years.
Yes, I am a nationalist. A double nationalist. USA and Texas.
All these terms are twisted in meaning by use by the Godless Left.
Totalitarianism in all forms is Evil and it always fails.
The path out of this insanity?
Restore the Constitution and DownSize DC!
And we need a new Great Awakening.
Not Communism, nor "common good conservatism," nor "New Right Conservatism." Just good, old-fashioned populism.
Enough with the radical "globalist free market, open borders" libertarian domestic policy. That's a race to the bottom. How are American workers supposed to compete with foreign slave labor?
And enough with Neocon imperialist foreign policy.
We need America First Populism & Nationalism.
“old-fashioned populism”
Populism was an agrarian leftist movement. I think it is miss-applied to Trump.
Trump is not a Leftist. He is a Nationalist. He is for free markets, not necessarily for globalist free markets.
I voted for Reagan, and I voted for Trump. But they advocated two very different policies.
Reagan supported free markets, an aggressive foreign policy, and amnestied the illegals in 1986. Trump advocated the opposite, on all counts; protectionism, foreign non-intervention, and a wall.
Reagan as the right man for the 1980s. He'd be the wrong man today.
I don’t think its even a contest. The Nationalists are routing the Globalists.
Sure the Globalists are happy to adopt strict libertarian positions when it suits them - no border, selling out the country via free trade with countries that cheat massively like China, etc - but then they’ll turn around and support things like constant meddling and wars abroad which the Libertarians definitely do not support. Here the Nationalists/Populists are much more in line with the Libertarians in not wanting perpetual wars.
Agreed. Best debate on this was between Shapiro and Carlson. I like Ben because he’s good on social issues but when it comes to economics, he’s as globalist as they come.
