Five ballistic missiles fired by China on Thursday appear to have landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone, Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi told reporters.
This is the first time that Chinese missiles have fallen into Japan's EEZ, Kishi said at the Defense Ministry here.
"We strongly condemn this grave matter involving Japan's national security and the safety of its people," he said.
Japan confirmed nine launches in total from around 3 p.m. to after 4 p.m. while Taiwan said it observed 11. Chinese state-owned broadcaster CCTV quoted a military expert saying this marks the first time a Chinese missile flew over Taiwan.
The missiles were launched during live-fire military exercises conducted by China around Taiwan following U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei.
China's People's Liberation Army is conducting air and sea drills in six locations including areas just 60 kilometers from the Hateruma and Yonaguni islands in Okinawa Prefecture, within Japan's EEZ.
Beijing remains dismissive of a complaint lodged by Japan.
"Since China and Japan have not yet carried out maritime delimitation in relevant waters, China does not accept the notion of so-called Japanese EEZ," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters Wednesday.

The scope of the exercises has been greatly expanded to cover areas east of Taiwan, compared with the Chinese drills conducted during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996.

The country's air force deployed the Yunyou-20, a new generation of air refueling craft, in the latest exercise. The new equipment is expected to expand the range of Chinese fighter jets and bombers by around 30%.
This expanded range will let China control a vast swath of airspace east of Taiwan and bolster its ability to thwart U.S. forces coming to the aid of Taiwan in the event of a Chinese takeover of the island.

Last time Japan and China went at it, China wasn’t a winner.
China may not have thought this through very well. Prodding Japan towards bolstering their “self defense” doesn’t seem to be a long term positive strategy.
Time to let the WWII restrictions on Japanese military go. We need them to arm up. AND we need some next gen drones ASAP.
And we need India on our side too.
For an ancient civilization, the Chinese are not acting very grown up OR wise.
