Parts of Great Barrier Reef show highest coral cover seen in 36 years

Two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia recorded the highest amount of coral cover in nearly four decades, though the reef is still vulnerable to climate change and mass bleaching, a monitoring group said Thursday.

The northern and central parts of the UNESCO world heritage-listed reef have experienced some recovery while the southern region has seen a loss of coral cover due to crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, according to a report by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, a government agency.

AIMS CEO Paul Hardisty said that while the coral in the north and central regions was a sign the reef could recover from disturbances, the loss of coral in the southern region demonstrated how the reef is still vulnerable to “continued acute and severe disturbances that are occurring more often and are longer-lasting.”

The Great Barrier Reef has suffered from widespread and severe bleaching because of rising ocean temperatures. The reef was hit especially hard in 2016 and 2017 by underwater heat waves that prompted bleaching events. This year, it’s suffering a sixth mass bleaching due to heat stress caused by climate change.

Actual documented changes in climate (not computer models) look like this ...

Is anyone worried?

Their favored way of lying is to present a partial selection of facts and then attribute perfectly ordinary or irrelevant events to their favorite villain, the satanic “warming” demon.

I was fortunate enough to dive the great barrier reef in Roatan, Honduras back in 2019. It was TEEMING with life! GF and I had a massive school of blue tang swing right through us! it was absolutely amazing!

We saw Nurse Sharks, Anemone, and more types of fish than I can possibly name.

We're going back to Roatan this December to do it again, then over to Belize for more diving. I cannot wait!! It's such an awesome experience.

No, the Great Barrier Reef is dying.

Global warming is killing the reef.

This is misinformation and must be quashed. /s

Thanks, I agree. I felt the same way the first time I saw it.

What we should be worried about, on a much less hysterical level, is what we would need to do when, not if, the climate returns to the glacial period levels shown at the beginning of the chart.

I say “not if” because the climate has alternated between glacial and inter-glacial about five times now in the last five million years. And the glacial periods have been far longer than the inter-glacials.

We’re going to pee away trillions of dollars on a non-existent climate problem and have nothing when the real deal comes along. Admittedly that could be a few thousand years and a lot could happen economically, technologically and so forth but ...

There are real threats that could happen anytime though and for all we know cause the glacial periods. Asteroids, comets and solar flares for some examples. Those are things we could prepare for and not spend trillions to accomplish.

End of rant, thanks for reading. :)
