PLA drills around Taiwan continue to 'rehearse reunification operation' amid Pelosi's visit, 'exercises blockading island to become routine'

Joint military exercises around the island of Taiwan by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) continued Wednesday with a joint blockade, sea assault and land and air combat trainings, involving the use of advanced weapons including J-20 stealth fighter jets and DF-17 hypersonic missiles after the drills started on Tuesday evening, when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed on the island which seriously violates China's sovereignty.

The exercises are unprecedented as the PLA conventional missiles are expected to fly over the island of Taiwan for the first time, the PLA forces will enter area within 12 nautical miles of the island and that the so-called median line will cease to exist, experts said, noting that by surrounding Taiwan entirely, the PLA are completely blockading the island demonstrating the Chinese mainland's absolute control over the Taiwan question.

The PLA Eastern Theater Command on Wednesday organized its affiliated Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, Strategic Support Force and Joint Logistic Support Force and conducted realistic combat-oriented joint exercises in the sea and air space to the north, southwest and southeast of the island of Taiwan, the PLA Eastern Theater Command said in a press release on the day.

Joint blockade, sea assault, land attack and air combat drills were at the core of the operation, as the exercises tested the troops' joint operational capabilities, said the press release.

Not sure what Taiwan did to anger the Neocons to the point of writing Taiwan’s obituary...but here we are. The noose now tightens...and tightens.

Pelosi and Tsai used the spotlight offered by the visit to praise democracy and play up mutual security interests.

“Facing deliberately heightened military threats, Taiwan will not back down, we will firmly uphold our nation’s sovereignty and continue to hold the line of defense for democracy,” Tsai said. “At the same time, we wish to cooperate and work in unity with democracies around the world to jointly safeguard democratic values.”

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year has drawn the world’s attention to security in the Taiwan Strait. Aggression against democratic Taiwan would have a tremendous impact on the security of the entire Indo-Pacific,” Tsai said.

Tsai added that Taiwan is committed to strengthening self-defense capability, and developing global trade and supply chains.

I would think that Tsai’s use of the words “our nation’s sovereignty” is crossing a line that can’t be walked back.

It seems to be an assertion of independence that China cannot overlook when said in the context of a face-to-face meeting with Pelosi.

“cannon fodder” for a fully committed US Navy, maybe. Is that what you’re advocating? Do they have enough ships to blockade Taiwan? Of course, they do. Can the USN run the blockade? Of course, they can. Can the PLA sink a carrier? Of course, they can. Can everyone you ever knew die in a US/China war? Of course, they can.

You seem to forget or donot know that there are several navies curretly involved in the active defense of Taiwan against China

China lacks the necessary where withal for a sustained successful invasion of Taiwan

And, perhaps most importantly, at present China is in the midst of economic catastrophe. Throughout the cities, banks are teetering and ordinary people have lost the ability to obtain the cash necessary to live

Didn’t help that Taiwan put Pelosi’s name up in lights and made this a spectacle along with Pelosi. Two female leaders flaunting themselves before a super power of mostly men is exactly what could be expected from Pelosi. She’s looking for a legacy to leave office ahead and wants to go out Big.

Unfortunately she is indeed “playing with fire” and underestimates what China can do.

“Two female leaders flaunting themselves...”

I was just thinking EXACTLY the same. They say women in power mean ‘peace’ - tell that to Taiwan and Ukraine.

Yes, and no nation ever went to war when their economy was in trouble....

Pelosi wore 4”+ spike heels. Such shoes are a clear indication she feels inferior and must increase her height to measure up.

I wait for the whines of women here that she wore the spikes because they are sexy. Crones don’t have sex

Oh, please..... China blockades Taiwain, we blockade oil out of the gulf. China is out of energy in less than 60 days. Game over. All this crap with drills is for internal Chinese consumption.

If China invades or blockades Taiwan, then the Malacca Dilemma ensures that China would be fatally vulnerable to counter-blockade.

CBGs can't safely approach closer than (maybe) 2000 klicks to one of China's land-based ASBM batteries. But most of China's oil comes through the Malacca Straits. Very easy to block off.

But - the historical force of the 'century of shame' ensures that China might - if pushed into a corner - invade or blockade Taiwan anyway.

They may believe that they can counter an American 'counter blockade' by threatening satellites. Or by establishing fire-control over the Bab el-Mandeb strait - the fourth most important world chokepoint for oil exports and imports - from their naval base at Djbouti.

Or, yikes, they might start hunting CBGs anywhere on the open sea with nuclear weapons. There are rungs on the ladder of nuclear escalation, and the lower rungs are perfectly survivable.

If China nukes a carrier group at sea, what will the US do? Kill a PLAN carrier, of course. But you run out of those targets pretty quickly.

Escalate to destroy a Chinese city? That's a game that the Chinese can play for a lot longer than the US. And the US will be the bad guy, remember. A 1st strike on a city with a million souls is very different from a 1st strike on a hardened military target at sea.

And with nukes now being used on sea targets, any US CBGs that approach within, say, 11000 klicks of China, or 7000 klicks of a Jin, are going to be taking a huge risk.

This is what may well happen if the idiots in state keep pushing China into a corner. Limited use of nuclear weapons.

'Propitious Clouds', indeed

China out of oil in 60 days and they just tap out? Yeah, right. Why the hell not blockade the Persian Gulf? The EU, Japan and American consumers would love that. Don’t forget you’ve got block that Russian oil (no wait, your big guy’s sanctions already did that, snicker). You’ve got real potential as an analyst in the Biden White House. You’re just as perceptive or are you just following the Biden/Pelosi lead? I’m sure you were Rah Rahing the same brilliance six months ago that got us into the other $500 million dollar a day quagmire in Ukraine. How many additional carrier battle groups did you dream up in that fantasy world of yours?
