Tonga’s eruption injected so much water into Earth’s atmosphere that it could weaken ozone layer

When an underwater volcano in Tonga erupted in January, it belched out more than ash and volcanic gases; it also spewed 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools' worth of water vapor into Earth's atmosphere, a new study finds.

This water vapor could end up being the most destructive part of the volcano's eruption because it could potentially exacerbate global warming and deplete the ozone layer, according to the study.

When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted on Jan. 15, it became the most powerful explosion on Earth in more than 30 years, with an equivalent force of 100 Hiroshima bombs.

But it’s an underwater volcano. How does anything get to the stratosphere once it breaches the ocean surface unless it’s already lighter than air?

Sometimes a very strong storm can pop some water vapor through the tropopause (14 km in the tropics). That's about a 1% event and only 14 km. The volcanic explosion sent water vapor up about 40 km. That's never going to happen with water vapor from weather

How does anything get to the stratosphere once it breaches the ocean surface unless it’s already lighter than air?

By the time water vapor reaches tropopause it has cooled to about -50 or -60 and it's heavier again. Only the strongest convection can force it above and only a little bit above.

first it was carbon dioxide, the building blocks of life, that was destroying the world, now it is water.

Do these fools ever quit? Because there are too many other fools in this country and in this world at large that believe this sh*t.

Yes. I should have used a link. It didn’t look that long on the page I took it from, but...in HTML on Free Republic, it was too long.

My mistake, and apologies to you, nuconvert. Hope I didn’t destroy your good thread. You were likely too polite to call me on the carpet for it, and I appreciate your forbearance.

Nice graphic. Who made it? Anybody anyone ever heard of or were you embarrassed by the name of the producer? Unsourced data is rather useless in a court of law.

This counter-claim to CO2 being the cause of the warming this year is holding up pretty well.

Totally agree.

Of course, this is the “science” from the crowd that denies XX and XY chromosomes and insists that women who have surgery to add a penis in order to simulate the appearance of a man can impregnate a woman, and that men who have breast implants to simulate the appearance of a woman can have a menstrual period.
