Russian gas producer Gazprom said on Saturday it had stopped supplying gas to EU member state Latvia, accusing it of violating conditions for gas withdrawal.
"Today, Gazprom suspended its gas supplies to Latvia... due to violations of the conditions" of purchase, the company said on Telegram. It was not specified which withdrawal condition had been violated.
The move comes a day after Latvian energy firm Latvijas Gaze said it was buying gas from Russia and paying in euros rather than in rubles.
In March Russian President Vladimir Putin said countries deemed unfriendly to Moscow would have to pay for gas deliveries in rubles. This was in response to a freeze on Russia's assets by foreign nations.
Russia has cut off gas supplies to Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, Netherlands and Denmark for refusing to comply with demands for payments in rubles.
The EU has faced criticism over the continued purchase of gas from Russia with concern the money raised is continuing to fund the war in Ukraine.
On Friday EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told DW that cutting dependence on Russian energy was not something that could be achieved overnight.

The alternative to Russian gas (and from other former USSR states) is dependence on Middle Eastern gas.
Depending on the Middle East is crazier than depending on Russia.
He has UDS (Ukrainian Derangement Syndrome) and is off his medication.

But that would be a false analogy.
Europe is not going to die.
There will be some inconveniences. There will be some costs. And then it will be done.
But Europe can simply not continue funding a regime that is such a threat to themselves. They cannot remain dependent on Russia for any essential supply, when Russia is proven to use it as a weapon against them.
No one can argue that Russia is a reliable supplier, a trustworthy neighbor, or a decent and civilized nation.
They are soaked in innocent blood, and must be defeated.
The reporting on this is allover the place.
Latvia refused to pay in rubles.
Latvia is getting Russian gas from somewhere else.
The cut-off doesn’t start til 2023.

What threat does Russia pose to most European countries? They need energy, and they have to get it somewhere; they won’t send their troops into the Middle East to secure it, so they need to look elsewhere. Many of these European countries got their raw materials and such from colonies in the past; those colonies are gone now. They have to make do, and if they see what we’re doing to our energy sector, they know there is no help here.
But, but, but... Biden went begging hat in hand to the Sauds....
But wait! The Europeans sure don't have a monopoly on dumb. Simply look at our lunatic leaders boomerang sanctions that have caused the highest inflation in 40 years and pushed our economy straight into a recession.
Now, add more craziness to the story. The US (and puppet NATO) covertly invade Ukraine years ago for regime change to tweak the Russians and then refuse to sit at the table to stop the madness. Who would have guessed?

They have openly threatened NATO with nuclear attack. But more importantly, they have systematically made territorial claims against NATO members (Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) on the same basis as their claims against the Ukraine. The current Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, the official spokesman on Russian Foreign policy, has called them Russian territory, that will return to their rightful historical place.
There is an American option, among others, to replace Russian energy supplies. New supply contracts have been signed with American suppliers since/as a result of the war. In the first half of this year, the United States became the world’s largest exporter of natural gas, and for the first time ever, Europe imported more natural gas from the USA, than by pipeline from Russia. American export capacity is expanding at double digit rates last year and is on track to do so again next year (the explosion at the Freeport terminal set back this year’s growth rate, but it should be back online in a few month’s as well.
Lots of other long term supply contracts have been signed with other suppliers as well since this recent Russian invasion - Algeria, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Egypt (shipping Israeli gas), Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Many others are in negotiation for supply contracts and development deals.
Russian gas is now just stopgap filler, until new suppliers are delivering. No new contracts for Russia.
The ME cannot invade europe.
Europe can develop alternatives to NG as well.
Europe survived without Russian gas and can do so again.

Yep. Putin killed the golden goose. As I said there will be eu pain, but eventually it will be Russias pain. “Christian” Russia can go eat its new churches when they start to reap what they have sown. And yes I do blame the Russian people as they apparently support Putins actions. But europe will go on as it always has.
The Middle East has been invading Europe quite successfully for the last couple decades.
Russia? It appears that they cannot even invade Ukraine.

That pipeline gas can’t physically be brought to market for other customers, and price caps are coming for the oil.
The party is over - when all that revenue is suddenly gone, a lot of people are going to be fighting mad about losing their piece. Among all those wounded soldiers, and the families of those killed, some percentage will want revenge.
The knives are going to be out, like we have not seen before in our lifetimes.
Get out while you can. I have heard that Russians can still get to Azerbaijan.
The change had to come, better now than never. The error has to be corrected. And the correction is in process. Spain for instance (a bit of forward looking planning) has been building LNG terminals and improving pipeline network connectivity to France, going back several years before all this. I looked into one of these terminal projects myself in April (not in a professional role, I’m retired). It was looking good, and it was ahead of schedule.
Also the US, South America, Mexico, and Africa.
