Russia's Gazprom says it has stopped gas supplies to Latvia
Deutsche Welle ^

Russian gas producer Gazprom said on Saturday it had stopped supplying gas to EU member state Latvia, accusing it of violating conditions for gas withdrawal.

"Today, Gazprom suspended its gas supplies to Latvia... due to violations of the conditions" of purchase, the company said on Telegram. It was not specified which withdrawal condition had been violated.

The move comes a day after Latvian energy firm Latvijas Gaze said it was buying gas from Russia and paying in euros rather than in rubles.

In March Russian President Vladimir Putin said countries deemed unfriendly to Moscow would have to pay for gas deliveries in rubles. This was in response to a freeze on Russia's assets by foreign nations.

Russia has cut off gas supplies to Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, Netherlands and Denmark for refusing to comply with demands for payments in rubles.

The EU has faced criticism over the continued purchase of gas from Russia with concern the money raised is continuing to fund the war in Ukraine.

On Friday EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told DW that cutting dependence on Russian energy was not something that could be achieved overnight.

Yrs there will be some pain but in the long term eu will be better off without russian gas. Russia not so much. Too bad eu had to learn the hard way not to hitch its wagon so much to anything ruzzian.

All are substitutable. Indeed, most are world market commodities. There is no need to boycott these.

The critical thing is natural gas via pipelines, because that is a natural monopoly, and Europe should never have gotten attached to Russia in that way.

No, but I think the tree branch analogy works better, small crowded Europe being a branch of Eurasia.

Europe should never have gotten itself connected to such a wretched place via pipelines. The sooner these are cut off the better. Pain now, freedom later.

But they did, so here we are.

An analogy could be a SCUBA diver in a long cave dive boycotting the next air bottles staged in front of him because he learned they were filled in a Russian dive shop and he’s boycotting all things Russian. This would be suicidally stupid, no?

It’s great to make political points with sanctions, but not if it means throwing your economies into depression and your people literally freezing in the winter.

I saw those Germans laughing when Trump tried to tell them that. I wonder if those chumps are laughing now?

Virtue signaling?

The EU and West is beginning to learn a lesson in “ arrogance “, these irrelevant countries and the EU outplayed their “ significance”. Another harsh lesson learned by backing senile Joe’s poorly thought out “ punitive “ sanctions. Prepare- the US is fast becoming irrelevant in the world, question is by design or stupidity?

Fact is sanctions historically never have worked out as intended. In fact, history shows sanctions creates war, Japan 1938, Germany post 1918, etc…

That said, sovereign nations are coming to realize the world has entered a commodities based monetary system ( much talked about by financial greats).

Bottom line, Russia has what the West needs, food, water, grains, NG, diesel, energy, commodities, metals, etc….I expect as the winter nears, they are coming to their senses and drop their childish defiance tone. They are fracturing, and will get busy negotiating very, very soon. Their alternative is massive rioting and government’s ousted, hint: it isn’t happening in Russia. Their choice: ….and Vlad says Checkmate, again, again and again.

Idiots say that Russia is “a country that’s just a gas station.”

They say that our GDP is many times larger.

That is by counting Netflix and Tesla as worth more than Russian gas, oil and steel industries.

Russia doesn’t need Netflix, but Europe needs Russian gas.

Our GDP is based on fantasy calculations, Russian wealth is in the ground, and is grounded in reality.

Please see 5 and 16.

? Did not trump say that europe should not be dependent on russian gas?. I agree. Eu needs to bite the bullet and get away from russian gas. Whats the crazy in that?

I agree. Bean counters try to equate and compare the muscular and industrially based economy of Russia with the soft flabby service economy of the USA. There is no comparison.

If you are literally freezing to death, if your industry shuts down from lack of gas, causing a great depression, “biting a bullet” won’t help, any more than that cave diver trying to hold his breath to the end of the cave instead of getting new air bottles.

You have to ensure your air supply all the way to the end of the cave and the surface.

Europe needed to ensure its gas supply before it decided to sanction Russia.

“Biting a bullet” is no answer if you are frozen to death during a great depression.
