Democrats hold slight edge over GOP, abortion more important to voters than inflation, poll shows

Democrats are leading in the tight midterm race with a 4% edge over the GOP on the generic congressional ballot, as voters rank abortion as a leading issue over inflation.

A new Suffolk University/USA Today poll shook up the midterms, after 44% of voters said that if the election were held today they would vote for a Democrat candidate, while 40% said they would vote for a Republican. About 16% still remain undecided.

Republicans have taken a hit over the past month, after a June poll from the university found Democrats and Republicans were evenly split on the generic congressional ballot with both parties receiving 40% of the vote.

It’s not about abortion. I agree with you. It’s just that people are not as mad at Democrats in general and as eager for Republicans in general as we here like to think. Dems are not in as bad a shape, and recent polls bear that out. Rasmussen is an outlier expecting the 2022 electorate to be 72% white. The rest assume it will be around 60% white. Hence the difference in the polls. I expect it to be the latter.

“It’s the economy, stupid!” Always has been ... always will be. With the exception of 2020 when Trump hatred and cheating put Biden in office to destroy the economy.

A new Suffolk University/USA Today poll...

Stop right there. Worthless poll.

For the record, I'm PRO-LIFE and I vote PRO-LIFE. I will drag myself over broken glass to get to the polls to vote against anyone who's pro-murdering unborn children.

“And it gets worse every year. I don’t really expect any red wave, maybe a tiny shift at best. If the GOP ever wins more than just one chamber of congress it would be amazing. Highly doubt president or senate will ever be GOP again.”

Over the last 50 years the culture war was fought by the left. At every major decision point the GOP compromised or acquiesced. The Democrats put up a united front and the GOP was divided between conservatives and moderates posing as conservatives at election time. Leftists captured the education system, organized religion, the legal profession, the medical profession, multimillion dollar charitable foundations, and more recently big business. They are entrenched and will not share or give up power and control.

All nations and civilizations through history have gone through cycles of ascendancy and decay. To your point we have reached the tipping point where likely a majority of citizens prefer big state socialism to limited government freedom and capitalism. Without a line drawn in the sand, and the willingness to risk life and property to fight the left, the supremacy of one party rule will become permanent.

It is clear the politicians in the majority of the GOP are not going to make a stand. They would not unite behind Trump from 2016-2020 and preferred collaborating with the Democrats to resisting the deep state. McConnell and McCarthy made the decision not to campaign in 2022 on a new version of Newt Gingrich’s 1994 “Contract for America” or Trumps 2016 “MAGA” platform. In a year where the wind should be at their back to produce a dramatic shift in the electorate, they have decided to run a “we aren’t as bad as the other guy” campaign. The white aristocrats running the GOP have made no significant effort to reach out to blacks and Hispanics who are beginning to see the light. Ironically, Donald Trump did so with some success even though he was slammed as a racist in the press every day. The RINO’s have chosen to enjoy their cushy lives as long as possible before the ship goes down.

Democrats are fighting for an ideology - big government socialism (some communism) where the state controls outcomes. Republicans are technocrats and deal makers serving the well heeled donors who finance their elections and give them cushy board seats, consulting jobs, and speaking assignments when they leave office. There is no party today representing the dream of individual liberty and limited government espoused by the founding fathers.

Without a framework and plan for resistance, the outcome is inevitable. Even if Trump should somehow be reelected in 2024, under our system one man cannot stop the train if one political party is committed to sustaining the path to socialism and the majority of the other party is collaborating with the socialist party.

Movements centered around one personality usually fizzle out once the personality is gone unless there is a strong organization of committed people in place to sustain it. We saw this when Reagan left office after two terms. The big state, big corporate, globalist Republicans pushed the conservatives out. The grass roots Tea Party movement in 2010 gave Republicans control of the House and the entrenched RINO’s led by Speaker Boehner, promptly dissed the Tea Party. In 2012 Romney refused to accept the help of the Tea Party, preferring to lose than to owe any favors to conservatives. Not only did the GOP leaders of Congress refuse to work with President Trump, they actively worked against him while he was in office and from all appearances seem to have no fire in the belly to actively oppose the rapid destruction of our economy, the dollar, and our institutions under the Biden administration.

Everyday McConnell, McCarthy, Romney, Murkowski, Collins, Thune, Graham, Cornyn, Cheney and others signal their unwillingness to do the hard lifting for freedom. Perhaps they believe acquiescence will save them from the gulag.

For arguments sake I am pro abortion. I really am not.

Inflation has taken away 10% of my savings this year and inflation has caused my expenses to go up 10%. If I needed an abortion would I choose to drive to the next state for it or choose to have inflation of 10%?

Inflation and gas price are the driving force hurting the democrats and not abortion. That poll is pure garbage.
