'Hard landing': Ferry crash causes damage to vessel, Fauntleroy Terminal structure

SEATTLE - A ferry and a structure at the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal in West Seattle were damaged Thursday morning after a crash at the dock.

The Washington State Ferries said there was a "hard landing" involving Ferry Cathlamet, and it caused significant damage to the boat and an offshore dolphin at the terminal.

A dolphin is a terminal structure located at the dock and it helps guide a vessel in.

looks more like it was hit by a ferry killer whale

This is a Washington State Ferry coming into Coupeville from Port Townsend on a very windy day. I’ve taken it a number of times. The Coupeville dock is the most difficult one to navigate in the entire system.

Not knowing the weather at the time - where there strong winds? What were the currents at the time?

I do know the current there can reach over 4 knots - which may have been a contributing factor.
