A rare occurrence is taking place as all 100 members of the United States are agreeing on something.
They want the Biden Administration to label Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.
Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., called on President Joe Biden to make the designation July 28 during a news conference.
“The United States Senate — all 100 members — are urging the Biden Administration to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism,” Graham said...
Blumenthal noted that the designation is more than just symbolism as it would implement concrete actions that would affect Russia’s dealing with the U.S.
“What does it mean? It means doing business with Russia with that designation is exceedingly hard,” Graham said. “It has second-layer sanctions. … It would limit dual use export items and, most importantly, it would wave sovereign immunity when it came to suing Russia in U.S. courts.”
Blumenthal noted the gruesome scenes the senators have seen firsthand — such as mass grave sites and women and children being executed — that has played a role in all 100 members of the Senate coming together.
“That is genocide,” Blumenthal said...
“Vladimir Putin has succeeded in uniting NATO, which nobody thought was possible,” he quipped. “And now he’s succeeded in uniting the United States Senate, which seemed even less likely.”
