He also told Biden that Ukraine is a Russian “internal matter” and to butt out, same as Taiwan vis a vis China.

In the early 70s, Nixon did try to open up China to the U.S.

I don’t think he ever thought our future leaders would be
stupid enough to turn massive amounts of our manufacturing
over to a potential global threat. Well, they did just that.

Despite a slaughter against peaceful protesters, our leaders
gave China MFN status and most of our trade within a few
short years in the early 1990s.

It was the height of the Cold War in the 1970s. The
U. S. S. R. was a global threat. We had to counter them
in all global settings. At the same time, things would
happen in China and it was so closed off the rest of the
world wouldn’t hear about it for months or years.

The plan was to counter Russia with a thawing relationship
with China. In that, it wasn’t a bad idea at the time.

It wasn’t until around 20 years after the US/Chinese
agreements were signed, that our collective ignorant
leadership decided to literally destroy our manufacturing
to finance China’s rise to a global world power and
threat.

Nixon didn’t agree to that. Ford didn’t. Carter didn’t.
Reagan didn’t. In came Mr. Juan Whirled order, and we
were off to the races.

This was no more Nixon’s fault, than our Founder’s fault
when the Communists twisted the U. S. Constitution to game
the system.

Would we say, “Our Founders should never have written
that document?”

Let’s compare it to another situation. When governor of
California, Ronald Reagan signed an Abortion Bill. What
it did was limit abortions to instances where the mother’s
life was in danger. Sounds good on the surface.

Little did Reagan know, that from then on, all abortions
were listed as due to a threat to the life of the mother.
Was that Reagan’s fault. Perhaps so, but you can’t say
the bill and logic behind it wasn’t sound. It was
intended to cut the number of abortions.

We can’t totally prevent the Communists from screwing us
in every instance they can. And we shouldn’t dump on
our own every time they do it.

They are dark subversive fools.

They deserve the blame which they so ardently seek to
slough off on everyone else.

Play with fire and get burned — such a deep geopolitical concept.

True.

And sometimes the reason for war is money (booty...as in Taiwan).

Two drowning men — the USSR and the ChiComs — will drown faster together clinging to each other than one will apart.

Nixon as much rescued the ChiComs. It could only turn out wrong.

Taiwan will be handed over to China by the US. Taiwan will be given a deal similar to Macau and Hong Kong. Their elites will take the money and run.

The US will get the assurance that this is China’s last territorial demand and they won’t steal US IP’s as much in the future.

Although that might be true, China has enough population to play games with for quite a while.

They get a few thousand into this country and we (patriots) will not only have to fight them, but the democrats also who will join them.

Nobody knows how many have come across the border in the last year and a half.

China may think they cowed Pelosi into postponing her trip earlier this year. That time she announced she contracted Covid. So China may think getting aggressive here could scare her off again. I think she goes, and the Chinese do something non-lethal like fire missiles off the coast of Taiwan.

That’s what the Communists want you to keep believing.

Of course the Bush era Republicans had nothing to do with it.

Even Carter didn’t buy into turning our nation into China’s
financier.

It’s a war of bluffing between Brandon and Xi and you’re money is on Brandon, the clown who left $80,000,000,000 of war materiel behind when he abandoned Afghanistan in the middle of the night?

I said nothing about later administrations.

Either good or bad.

But just as FingDR inherited a government operating by constitutional means amd left Arbitrary government behind him, it was Nixon who opened communist China. Should have left them to rot.

As for later administrations, well, Mr No Repeal Eisenhower rubber stamped FDR’s high hsnded lawlessness too. Why would Nixon not think the ChiComs would take full advantage of his gift for a way out of their predicament? Especially given the long line of commie scum doing what they can to help our rivals from inside our own government?

I worked in three urea / natural gas fertilizer plants in China from fall 1976 to spring 1977. They were among the first large deals after Nixon opened up China. The plants were made by the Dutch company Kellogg Continental, but used a number of American subsystems. My company provided the steam plants for the process. You would’t believe how primitive things were back then; it was like going back 2,000 years in many places. I never would have dreamed they could progress so far in only 45 years.

It’s amazing to me, the number of people who toss out the
insults to Nixon, when it wasn’t him that allowed our
corporations to move all production to China.

You absolve everyone but Nixon. Why? You can’t see the
reality of this, the change that took place in around
1990-92, that Nixon did not arrange?

Did Nixon set up John McCain to argue MFN status for China?
Did he ask our leaders to ignore Tainamen Square and reward
China for it’s despicable behavior?

Surely on some level you can see what you are doing.

You didn’t mention one person other than Nixon for blame.

It’s not for Nixon to prevent future leaders from being
stupid. Who would have thought in 1989 (Apx), that
the butchers of Peking would be rewarded with most of
our manufacturing in 1990-92?

Nixon? Ha!

Woodward, Bernstein, is that you?

Nixon did it to get the Soviets to the bargaining table to negotiating reductions in nuclear weapons, he never meant to open up trade with China.

What happened is that China fooled the West into thinking China was their friend, and was embracing Capitalism, and they bought it. Everybody loved China in the 1980s.

I didn’t absolve anyone. Just as I don’t absolve Eisenhower for rubber stamping FDR kicking the Constitution to the curb.

Communist China should have never been opened no matter who did it.

Had Nixon not opened communist China and someone one else done so I would be writing against them.
