European gas prices rose 9%, trading close to its earlier all-time high after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Critics accuse the Russian government of using gas as a political weapon.
Russia has been cutting flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany, with it now operating at less than a fifth of its normal capacity.
Germany imports 55% of its gas from Russia and most of it comes through Nord Stream 1 - with the rest coming from land-based pipelines.
Russian energy firm Gazprom has sought to justify the latest cut by saying it was needed to allow maintenance work on a turbine.

This is certainly a no-brainer. All they need to do is consult Greta Thunberg to receive guidance and wisdom on how to overcome this little glitch in energy production.

The more that most of Western Europe continues to ration their energy resources, the more the Russians/Putin will continue to turn the dial. In other words, the Russians/Putin has/have most of Western Europe by the testis given the Russians/Putin ultimately control the supply.
Most of EU headed towards economic recession.
The US is arguably already in economic recession.
And the energy partnership between most of Western Europe and Russia/Putin is done/finished and won’t be rebuilt to what it was before the start of the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Russia/Putin done with Western Europe.
Maybe using political weapons against your gas supplier wasn’t such a terribly bright idea.

The Germans and NATO are amazing. Push this whole thing into existence, launch the equivalent of nuclear economic war, and then have the temerity to be angry when the nation you attack returns in kind.
I get this feeling that this whole Ukrainian situation is ultimatley about NATO wanting to get their hands on Russian oil....via a war with Russia.
European countries are energy poor.

People keep saying that, but often miss the larger point. There would have been no problem had the customer also not engaged in constant insults and provocation.
You have to choose, be a customer or an expansionist adversary to your vendor. You can’t do both.
Nordstream 2 is sitting empty and brand new. Germany cut itself off. The old term for Germans “blockhead” didn’t come from nowhere. Germans either do things beautifully, or the screw thongs up in ways you could never even imagine.

Meanwhile, with the loss of a massive gas facility to a fantastically large fire, Russia has less and possibly no gas to deliver any way
