Ukrainian military officials have claimed a “turning point” in the battle to retake the southern region of Kherson, saying they will use western weapons to liberate by September the first major city captured by Russian forces.
Sergiy Khlan, an aide to the administrative head of the Kherson region, said in an interview with Ukrainian television on Sunday: “We can say that a turning point has occurred on the battlefield. We are switching from defensive to counteroffensive actions.”
“We can say that the Kherson region will definitely be liberated by September, and all the occupiers’ plans will fail,” he added.

The Ukrainians are advancing steadily in heavy fighting (reportedly). Looks like the Russians have accepted that they will be pushed back over the Dnieper and are merely trying to make the enemy pay dearly for their gains.

The same thing occurred to me. I heard an interesting argument though. The argument is that the Ukrainians want to prevent wavering citizens in those areas from working with the Russians.
Seems like either they are stupid, giving away plans and setting themselves up for a possible public failure, or they have some goal. At least that would be a possible reason for making the announcement.
They aren’t revealing any secrets. They’ve fought their way close to the suburbs of Kherson. They’re just trying to show the West some return on its investment.
The “referendum” in Kherson is on Sept 11. 6 weeks.

They are giving Russia a choice. If Russia diverts forces from Donbas, that effort may bog down. If Russia keeps the present situation, the Ukrainians are closing in on Kherson.
