The suspect in the attack of Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., was arrested Saturday afternoon on a federal assault charge, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Western District of New York announced.
David Jakubonis is scheduled to make his first court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Marion W. Payson Saturday. Zeldin is running for New York governor as a Republican.
Jakubonis, 43 of Fairport, New York, has been charged with attempted assault in the second degree on the state level. He was arraigned in Perinton Town Court and released on his own recognizance after the Thursday attack.

I think it’s a federal deal because he is a current member of Congress, and assaulting and/or attempting to murder a member of Congress IS a federal crime.

It’s a Federal crime to attack a member of Congress, which is why the FBI is involved. Of course in NY the libs consider armed assault to be a non-violent crime, sounds like you share their view since you’re upset the Feds arrested the guy.
I’m surprised the Feds consider it a crime to assault a Republican Congressman.
What ever happened to that black high school student, Timothy George Simpkins, who shot a teacher and students in Texas? He was releaseed from jail the next day, claimed he was bullied so he was released.

...this was not an assassination attempt, and it was BARELY an assault... if a jury sees that, he’ll walk free...
It was an assassination attempt . The guy was screaming “you’re done” and the weapon he was carrying - a hard plastic “brass knuckles” type of thing with two finger holes and sharp blades that look like cat ears - is meant for going for the throat, the jugular vein or the eyes.
The fact that Zeldin (ex-military and still fit) has quick reflexes and grabbed the guy’s wrist and held it back until other people - civilians - in the crowd could subdue him is the only reason this did not succeed.
ALL DEMOCRATS ARE EVIL!!
But I think that was his whole point. Everything is becoming a Federal crime. Most areas of criminal law are historically, and should be, the province of the states.
Why?
That’s part of the plan.
