US Foreign Aid by Country 2022

Foreign aid is money that is given by the United States government to governments of other nations. According to the Congressional Research Service, there are five categories of foreign aid: economic assistance, humanitarian aid, multilateral economic contributions, bilateral development aid, and military aid.

The U.S. provides aid to countries that are recovering from war, developing countries, and countries that are strategically important to the U.S. In 2019 (the most recent year for which comprehensive numbers have been released), the U.S. spent over $47 billion on foreign aid – about the same as 2018 and $1 billion more than in 2017. More than 35% of that aid went to ten countries. The U.S. provides aid to countries that are recovering from war, developing countries, and countries that are strategically important to the U.S. In 2019 (the most recent year for which comprehensive numbers have been released), the U.S. spent over $47 billion on foreign aid - about the same as 2018 and $1 billion more than in 2017.

10 countries that receive the most U.S. foreign aid:

Afghanistan ($4.89 billion)

Israel ($3.3 billion)

Jordan ($1.72 billion)

Egypt ($1.46 billion)

Iraq ($960 million)

Ethiopia ($922 million)

Yemen ($809 million)

Colombia ($800 million)

Nigeria ($793 million)

Lebanon ($790 million)

Several governmental agencies provide foreign aid, including the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Energy, and the Peace Corps, just to name a few. As a rule, foreign aid falls into one of two categories: military aid and humanitarian (economic, developmental, or emergency relief) aid.

Many countries all over the world receive foreign aid from the United States, but there are a few that receive significant amounts. Iraq received over $5 billion in 2016, Afghanistan also receives several billion, Israel received over $3 billion, and Egypt and Jordan each received over $1 billion in aid. These countries receive a significant amount of military aid. In fact, all of Israel’s $3.1 billion was in military aid.

Other nations have received economic and development aid. Countries in Africa received about 32% of U.S. aid. Nations that benefit include Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. About 31% of U.S. aid is spent in the Middle East, while 25% is spent in Asia.

Compared to other nations, the U.S. by far spends more foreign aid than anyone else. Germany is the next largest donor, but the U.S. spends over $10 billion a year more than this nation. That said, when considering foreign aid as a percentage of total GDP ($21.43 trillion in 2019), the U.S. is one of the lowest spenders among all developed countries.

Like I said, if one lives next to a much bigger neighbor, do not antagonize them. Learn from Mexico. Cuban ports were closed by US Navy. Never Mazatlán or Puerto Vallarta. And all apartment buildings in Mexico are in tact. Ukraine is a living hell right now.

“...if one lives next to a much bigger neighbor, do not antagonize them...”

You must be one of those who blames the rape victim instead of the rapist.

Ukraine did not invade Russia. The Republic of Georgia did not invade Russia. Russia makes land grabs and now attempted nation grabs. Living as an independent nation is enough to antagonize Russia.

Thank you for your courteous reply.

There is significant agreement between us in this area (Foreign Aid, Immigration), despite our disagreement on the quality of the Ukrainian Political Leadership, Politicians, Government, Media or the Direction Ukraine is taking.

Incorrect. I choose to support the nation invaded by Russia. I present factual data which often some frankly ignore and/ or leave unread. Sweeping generalization is really the logical error here jumps to a conclusion based on limited or inadequate info. Some find it so much easier to throw labels then investigate info. I actually do NOT speak against the Russian people. I am totally against the terrorist Putin. In referenceing just Russia & Ukraine, IMO he is totally responsible for the deaths of his own people as well as Ukrainians. However, some commenters are not in agreement with my stance & hold their own opinions based on their preferred sources. AND, THAT IS OK!! Everyone in the U.S. is still entitled tofFreedom of thought & freedom of speech

Biden IS Maidan Ukraine and Maidan Ukraine IS Biden Crime Family. You are really stupid to miss that.

You really are a GloboHomo stooge and a Uke Nazi stooge.

You’re also arrogant and think you know more about Ukraine than anyone else in the world.

You are indeed brainwashed. You justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine because of Biden corruption. What about Russian corruption? What about all Washington, DC corruption? Why do you talk about the non-issue of Nazis in Ukraine? What of Russia’s Wagner group? I traveled the Ukraine and never saw a Nazi. I did see a lot of great people who do not deserve to have their country invaded. Why do you agree with ALL and I mean ALL of Moscow talking points?

“There is significant agreement between us”

Thank you. I truly appreciate your comment. Often, there actually is much agreement between freepers if we just take the time.

However, some prefer to place individuals in pre-labeled pejorative boxes commenting without considering total context of total post. [No finger pointing needed. With the posts regarding Ukraine & Russia, it is easily discerned.]

I believe you would be surprised if I shared the hateful freeper mail I have received. But, I won’t because it is just a reflection of that individual sending mail [no one on this post today]. Nor, is that behavior representative of the true heart of real Free Republic posters.

I understand withh all the Pro-Putin info our there by Q etc, individuals can come pre-biased against Ukraine. I also understand how people with family & friends in Ukraine do not understand the vehemence Pro-Putin have. I place my self with the latter group as I have personal friends in Ukraine as well as Russia.

I tell you the real problem is PUTIN! LOL

All Animals Are Equal, But Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others.

Fortunately for you, you are one of those animals that are more equal than the others, so YOU get to pick and choose whose corruption is important and whose corruption is not important.

In your opinion.

I think Ukraine now dwarfs the other recipients.

What Ukraine gets is dwarfed by the EU money sent to Russia: Hundreds of millions of dollars every single day.

The Russian missiles raining on Ukraine are made in Russia but they are financed in Brussels and Berlin.

Results speak better than opinions.
Smart thing to do is not give rapist a chance to rape you
Russia had made it abubently clear it will not tolerate NATO member on it’s border. Did erotic dancer Zelensky think Biden and NATO would protect him from Russian aggression?
Obviously Zelensky believed it and Ukrainians are paying the price. And if the war continues many more months more destruction of Ukraine will be unlivable.

If it were up to that little Ukrainian prick we’d be forking over the $9 billion a month he’s been demanding.

Why are we sending aid to anyone?

This is 2022, not 1945. Why don’t you put up the figures of the billions foreign nationals pull out of this nations economy every year and send back in remittances?

Mexico is the biggest at around &145 billion a year.

“This is 2022, not 1945.”

I agree.

I posted about 5 articles to share info.on subject.

See my comment #24. “I think our foreign aid budget is excessive & ludicrous? YES! [the U.S. even sends funds to Russia?!?!?!]

Ukrainians fight with the spirit of ‘76. You want them to be act like downtrodden serfs or surrender monkeys. The Russian invasion of the Republic of Georgia proves that all of Russia’s neighbors need to band together to defend themselves from Putin’s insanity.
