Ukraine’s Zelensky Says a Cease-Fire With Russia, Without Reclaiming Lost Lands, Will Only Prolong War
WSJ ^ | 22-JUL-2022 | Yaroslav Trofimov

Recent shipments of U.S. and allied weapons, particularly the Himars multiple-launch rocket systems and 155mm howitzers, have helped to blunt Russia’s offensive in the Donbas and stabilize the situation there, Mr. Zelensky said. The Russians used to fire 12,000 artillery shells daily against 1,000 to 2,000 by Ukraine, he said. Now, he added, Ukraine can fire some 6,000 shells a day while Russia is beginning to feel a shortage of ammunition and troops.

This change in the balance of firepower has stemmed Ukrainian casualties, Mr. Zelensky said. At the peak of fighting in May and June, he said, Ukraine was losing between 100 and 200 troops a day; now, it is down to some 30 fatalities a day and around 250 wounded.

A war does not always go to the superior power...Vietnam, for example. The war goes until one side is too tired, economically ruined, or politically can’t handle the costs. A war does not end until both sides agree to end it, or one side is totally ground down to the dirt. (Germany losing its capital and Hitler committing suicide.)

Europe is terrified of a resurgent Russia. The Ukraine conflict put paid to the idea that wars of conquest were so twentieth century. Europe will back Ukraine because as long as the Ukrainians fight the Europeans don’t have to. They realize this and will take the economic and political hits necessary to keep Ukraine supplied with whatever it needs to keep Russia pinned down. They realize that Putin, as he has implied many times, wants to recreate the strategic depth Russia once had. That means Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania and half of Poland. Poland is taking delivery of 113 Abrams tanks just given up by the US Marines, this is because the other several hundred Abrams tanks they want will take some time to refurbish and they’ve given their old T-72’s to Ukraine. Shortly, Poland will have the strongest land army in Europe.

Even if the US drops Ukraine after the midterms, Europe will be shipping food, material and medical supplies across the Ukrainian border. If things continue on their present trajectory, it will be Russia that sues for peace. They may have to wait until Putin is dead.

Take it easy on Speedy. He’s a high school kid, having some fun. My guess is 10th grade.

Maybe once he turns 16 and gets a driver’s license, he won’t be on here pushing propaganda as much.

We can only hope.

Why doesn’t the government of POLAND send its military to attack the Russians?

There are plans under way for Poland's military to occupy Western Ukraine so that Zelenski can send more Ukraine forces to the eastern front. If that happens though, they're gonna have a hard time getting the Poles to leave again.

I disagree with your assessment of the Russia/Ukraine War.

The Russians won’t sue for peace under any circumstances.
Putin could die tomorrow and their policies will continue oni just like when he was alive.

Why would Russia’s foreign policy position change because of Putin dying?

I have yet to see any advantage shift to Ukraine. These are just words and Z and his crew sell what we pay for to other entities.

The three captured mercenaries would do better to throw themselves on the mercy of the new Donetsk government and write a letter to Putin claiming they were misled into becoming involved. Plead for mercy. Take the best deal they can.

“Why would Russia’s foreign policy position change because of Putin dying?”

You may be correct in your assessment. However, I think the slow grinding of sanctions on the population will combine with other reasons, like the population decline. When the war started many draft age boys left the country because life as a draftee in Russia’s army is horrendous. Beatings and deaths are common.

Quick story. Have you ever been to a parade where there’s a truck or wagon with a cage on the back full of local celebrities? It’s usually a fundraiser. You can buy someone out the cage. In the nineteenth century the Kaiser’s army would go around to every village with a cage on a wagon. The soldiers would search each house and ferret out any twelve-year-old or older boy and throw him in the cage. He had just been inducted into the army. The Kaiser’s army had the highest peace time death rate of any army in any time. They’d take men out of prison and put them in the army, so your 12-year-old would be shoved into a hundred-man barracks with criminals and lunatics. He’d be raped and possibly killed.

When my mother’s father, Elmer Hallock, born in the 1880’s reached that age his parents scrimped up some money and gave it to him along with a map torn from a schoolbook. Elmer walked and hitched and stole rides to Portugal. He boarded a boat to the United States and never saw or heard from his parents again. My grandparents so loathed Germany that they never spoke German again. My mother remembers them arguing with a dictionary. “You, you...*flipflipflip* pusillanimous!”
“What is this...*grabs dictionary, reads definition...flipflipflip another derogatory term*”

What I’ve seen about the Russian army and how frightened mothers are of sending their boys off to the draft reminds me very much of this.

Several sources have said that some unknown numbers of youths have permanently fled Russia. This along with most of their IT people who knew they’d be unemployed under sanctions. Russia is a failing state.

Sounds like a significant change in the artillery war with advantage shifting to Ukraine.

You're a mental midget if you believe that.

There is zero chance of Ukraine gaining back any lost land. The longer it takes for the Ukrainians to surrender, the more Ukrainians that will needlessly die and more Ukraine will shrink.

Any claim to the contrary is solely about fooling morons like you into thinking Ukraine has a chance so our corrupt political class can continue use the war as a means of paying off the defense industry and laundering money to itself and its donor class.

EU nat gas storage levels already at 65%. Looks like storage will reach 80%

Then, why is the EU demanding countries like Hungary, which have gas stored and a good relationship with Russians, share it with countries that have don't have sufficient reserves.

A country like Germany can't survive the winter without Russian oil.

Do you know the Russians ban LGBT propaganda? That marriage is between a man and woman in Russia? That there only two genders there?

That is probably why you hate Russia so much.

“Russians ban LGBT propaganda”

I don’t care.

They also ban freedom in that country.

Go protest the war and get sent to jail.

Dirty RuZZian.

In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea and said that was all they wanted.

That was before Ukraine reneged on Minsk Accords, which is signed off on, and turned neo-Nazis loose on ethnic Russians in Donetsk and Ukraine, with help of funding from us.

It was also before we started arming Ukraine with offensive weapons and before the biolabs we were funding were proven to have deadly pathogens in them.

How ammo depots do the Ukrainians have left? How many tanks? Planes? We and Europe have spent tens of billions of dollars and everything we send keep getting blown up

This war is de-militarizing the Europe Union.

Go protest the war and get sent to jail.

That is an easily refuted lie. Protests occur and are allowed in Russia. Those caught in illegals ones are fined.

You seem to forget there is no iron curtain. One can turn on Russian YouTube and find out what is going on in Russia.

What the Russians don't allow, however, is protests that shutdown city streets and businesses and they don't tolerate rioting like Democrats do in big US cities.

Why would the Ukrainians believe anything the Russians say at this point? Negotiating a cease-fire would just give Russia time to build up her army again and come back for more.

Since you love history so much, why leave out the 2014 Obama/Biden overthrow of Ukrainian democracy? Why leave out the 50% of Ukrainians who were disenfranchised by the Revolution and the 3 Oblasts that seceded? Why leave out the 8 year civil war that was being fought before the Russians stepped in to help their Allies?

“neo-nazi henchmen are now reduced to kidnapping unwilling people off the street and sending them to the Russian front with little equipment or planning to act as cannon fodder.

Actually, it is the Donetsk separatists’ that desperate draft campaign empties streets of men

I’m with you still hoping some Russian or Ukrainian patriot takes out that corrupt murderer Putin that orchestrated this invasion for his bloody ego & legacy!
