There is no clear evidence that depression is caused by low serotonin levels, research suggests.
The new review, which analysed existing studies, suggests the condition is not likely caused by a chemical imbalance, and calls into question what antidepressants do.
Researchers say their findings are important as studies show that as many as 85-90% of the public believes that depression is caused by low serotonin or a chemical imbalance.

Depression is caused because an individual did not develop healthy coping mechanisms to stress during their early development. Clinical depression (in contrast to situational depression) reflects the result when such an individual is exposed to chronic stress that exceeds their ability to cope.
Houserino, do you have a short attention span?
Who said anything about “religious fervor as a solution to real world problems”?
Don’t confuse the person of Jesus Christ who was resurrected from the dead for your justification and lives in Heaven for you, with “religious fervor”.
Jesus is a real live person, not a religion.
Religion tells you to EARN your justification by doing this and doing that. Good luck with that one.
But Jesus by GRACE has already earned your justification for you.
Ignorance is bliss.
I don’t get what’s so complicated. You said the cure for depression is believing in Jesus. I said that’s nonsense.
That’s it.
I have never been so depressed as when I have been a Christian and observed all the evil in the world.
I’ve always argued this.. doesn’t depression stem from bad things happening?
Pills don’t stop bad things from happening. When I’ve suffered depression I’ve known why.
Some people, like my ex wife, say “I don’t know”. There is an obvious reason, but therapy is there to get to the bottom of it.
Unhelpful tone, I doubt Jesus would approve.
So do I, and for many, many years. My way out is what I offered in my first post here.
We all sink into the issue Paul speaks of in 2 Cor.1:8 from time to time.
But later Paul explains the theme of his life:
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed2 Cor. 4:8-9.
As I was saying in my first post, we are not distressed or in despair BECAUSE we are never forsaken thus we are not destroyed.
BTW, the deepest root of our depressions and failures is condemnation which is NOT from God (Rom. 8:1). Took me many years and learning form Pastor Joseph Prince to learn that. I am now basically free of fear and depression.
I had a co-worker who was a brilliant software engineer. He also had severe depression and agoraphobia problems. His expertise was so valuable that he was sent as an advisor to General Schwartzkopf to use the wargaming software for Desert Storm. The agoraphobia made that trip very difficult for him. At one point we discussed the impacts of Prozac. He said that the suicidal ideation is something that was always present. Prozac just removed the inhibition to act on the ideas. He committed suicide just a month later.
Jesus is the answer to depression the way your money in the bank is the answer to buying what you need.
But you have take out and use the money in the bank for it to do you any good. A lot of people have Jesus but they don’t use Jesus as he said to use him. Like a rich person who lives in poverty because he doesn’t know he has that money and doesn’t use the money.
So basically, if you are a Christian and suffer from depression, you either a bad Christian or you were never a Christian at all?
Jesus hit back sometimes and so do I. Read the tone and words of his response to my first post.
Jesus is the answer to depression the way your money in the bank is the answer to buying what you need.
But you have take out and use the money in the bank for it to do you any good. A lot of people have Jesus but they don’t know how to use Jesus as he said to use him.
I know because that was me for years. Like a rich person who lives in poverty because he doesn’t know he has that money and doesn’t use the money.
Depression stems from our REACTIONS to bad things happening.
Life is going to get very interesting when the pharmaceutical supply from China gets cut off. It won't be just a few people going nuts from failure to stay on their psychotropic meds. Millions will have an involuntary cut off of meds that need an extended tapering to avoid the consequences of a cold turkey stop.
Depression is nothing more than feeling sorry for yourself. People just need to get over it and move on with life.
Depression is nothing more than feeling sorry for yourself. People just need to get over it and move on with life.
______________
Very ignorant statement.
People who cannot move, cannot get over it.
EXACTLY !
Apparently Paul had ups and downs. While Jesus was the theme of his life, there were times in which he despaired...and despair isn't just a mild dip into depression.
As to my own experience, there are a host of tactics I use to avoid deep depression. Prayer is a major one, and so is a lot of physical exercise.
As to depression, there is a lot to be depressed about. Evil abounds and many are snared by it. Even our country is being influenced by it.
Darkness/evil (which is deeply depressing to look upon) is quite real. Pretending it doesn't exist is no solution to the depression it causes.
I can say that without Jesus, the darkness would be unbearable. But, and I don't think this is what you meant, Jesus isn't a kind of magic wand that makes it all go away.
While I don't like depression, I respect it. It is a natural side-effect of thinking and knowing. IMO, the trick is knowing how to deal with it.
