There is no clear evidence that depression is caused by low serotonin levels, research suggests.
The new review, which analysed existing studies, suggests the condition is not likely caused by a chemical imbalance, and calls into question what antidepressants do.
Researchers say their findings are important as studies show that as many as 85-90% of the public believes that depression is caused by low serotonin or a chemical imbalance.

That's easy!
What they DO is cause high school kids like Kip Kinkel
to murder their parent's with the .22 rifle dad gave him
for his birthday - then take the rifle to the high school
cafeteria and start shooting his classmates.
His own mother was the psychologist who prescribed the meds, too.
It's a tragic story.
I used to live a mile from Thurston high school in Springfield, Oregon
where and when this happened in May 1998.
Ignorant comment.
Don’t try to worm out of it, you said Jesus is the cure for depression. Moronic.
It’s not a chemical issue even though there are certain chemicals produced by our emptions. Our emotions produce all kinds of chemicals.
The issue is our beliefs and thinking which are reflected in our emotions which trigger certain chemical reactions.
Don’t put the cart before the horse.
I'd say the future looking bark and bleak is a big cause of it. For some, it's on a personal level. For others, it's a wider view of how screwed up the world is. They can have various views ranging from only 9.47 years left until the planet is beyond hope to the opposite of watching the widespread propaganda and corruption of all institutions that feeds the former their view.
Are we talking about the depression that Biden is pushing.
Did I say if you have Jesus your depression will go away?
What did I say was the cause of depression?
Pay attention.
Jesus is the solution but many Christians who bought Jesus don’t buy his solution. True with many things.
“I’m a carrier.”
Good one, Thanks.
I agree. Tylenol is pretty effective, but Tylenol don’t fix it.
Conflating serotonin imbalance with chemical imbalance.
“… depression is caused by low serotonin levels…”
“… suggests the condition is not likely caused by a chemical imbalance…”
A chemical, lithium, works well on the manic phase of bipolar disease, and helps prevent episodes of severe depression, so it’s likely that there is some sort of chemical imbalance occurring.
Ah, so you cause depression in others. Hmmm. Very interesting. Is that you, Satan?
Exactly.
Chemicals or alcohol or drugs are palliative, not curative, answers to personal issues like depression.
They have no idea what the “brain chemicals” are or what the proper amounts are. It’s just a scientific sounding fakery to justify the drug pushing Therapeutic State. Every one of your chronic homeless was made that way with drugs and often ECT.
Houserino, again, pay attention.
Jesus is the solution but many Christians who bought Jesus don’t buy his solution. True with many things.
What do you think happens if your supplies of adrenaline, dopamine, serotonin and GABA are cut off? Trust me, it isn’t pretty. Pharmaceuticals are not the answer. I favor a natural approach.
I’m a carrier.
One of my favorite stories is about a high-rpm guy I used to work for who got mad and red faced in the office one day. I could deal with him but other employees were terrified of his temper. I said, "Ted, simmer down, you are going to have a heart attack."
He swung around on me and yelled, " I don't have heart attacks -- I GIVE heart attacks!" Those that knew him found it a perfect story of his persona.
Sorry, I just don’t buy religious fervor as a solution to real world problems.
I think the “chemical imbalance” angle was to always sell more scrips for Big Pharma.
You did say:
“Jesus is the solution”
What the hell does that mean if not that Jesus will resolve ones depression?
The Apostle Paul gave indication that he went through a rather significant period of depression. In 2 Cor 1:8 (said to be speaking of himself but using 2nd person): "We (I) were (was) under great pressure, far beyond our (my) ability to endure, so that we (I) despaired of life itself."
As re: scientists thinking that low blood serotonin is the cause, they are most likely conflating correlation with causation.
BTW, I speak first-hand about depression.
