Britain's former finance minister Rishi Sunak again topped the latest vote by Conservative MPs to choose a new prime minister, as another candidate was eliminated to leave three contenders in the race.
Sunak garnered 118 votes, followed by former defence minister Penny Mordaunt on 92 and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on 86, with longshot candidate Kemi Badenoch trailing on 59 and therefore eliminated from the contest.
The vote means that Britain will get either its first British Asian prime minister or the third female leader in the country's history.
Sunak, whose resignation helped to topple outgoing leader Boris Johnson, fell two votes short of the number needed to guarantee a place among the final two, who will battle it out over the summer months before party members choose the winner.
He is all but guaranteed to make the final cut in Wednesday's last round of voting by MPs.
But the race to join him further tightened, with Truss making up five votes on Mordaunt -- the one-time bookmaker's favourite.
Truss is now only six behind, and will hope that the right wing of the party swings behind her following the departure of Badenoch, a favourite of the grassroots members.

Boris Johnson was allegedly from the “right wing of the party”. Apparently “right wing of the party” over there means “agrees with Barack 0bama on 90% of the issues”
I very much doubt the Tories backing outsider Kemi Badenoch are going to jump onto the Liz Truss band wagon, so she is likely the next one out.
Liz Truss is now the betting favorite to become PM https://electionbettingodds.com/NextUKConservativeLeader2022.html
Rishi Sunak proposing higher taxes after all the COVID spending the George H.W. Bush kind of Conservative ready to be pancaked by Sir Keir Starmer the “New Labor” Neoconservative Russia-hating champion.
Sunak=Keir Starmer Labor leader next PM for what it’s worth.
Rushing.
What a proper British name.
Maybe he can bring the English white cholera and blue cholera workers together!
Autocorrect, damn you.... Rishi not rushing...
Lol...punters know best.
Yes, they made Biden the favorite over Trump, correctly counting on massive fraud.
I understand that Sunak is a WEF flunky with Chinese connections.
Rishi Sunak is a snake. Penny Mourdant is beautiful but not very bright. That leaves Liz Truss to run the UK. Good luck, Liz.
Truss is a moron. Could be the worst ever.
The guy connected to the Chinese Communist Party and the World Economic Forum , great
Rishi Sunak is , how shall i say, ...shady
he and the wife own a chinese connected
company that deals in social crediting
and surveillance.
All the politicians of this world and that includes some Republican Governors-elected officials here in the USA have very clear WEF ties as well.
Looks like the bookmakers were right...its Truss v Sunnak.
Yes, and Liz is the favorite. I think she will make as good a PM as the UK deserves, maybe better.
Color me surprised if a former Lib-Dem and Remainer becomes the leader of the Conservative party to replace Johnson
Those are just partisan talking points. She was Liberal Democrat in college but became a Conservative shortly after graduation. At the same age, and older than that, Ronald Reagan was a Liberal Democrat also. And she opposed Brexit but then worked hard to make Brexit work after the referendum passed. If that’s all Rishi has, he is doomed. The real issues are taxes, economic development, and loyalty. I don’t recall that Rome elected Brutus as leader after he killed Caesar, and I don’t think the UK Conservative Party will do anything similar.
Lol...since when are facts considered talking points?
Truss is not a natural conservative and has been wrong on the important issues for most of her political life. Sure she wants lower taxes (and presumably larger deficits), but it was her sanctions regime that caused food/energy prices to skyrocket in the first place.
Assuming the Conservatives didn't rise up against Johnson just to replace him with one of his cronies...at least Sunnak has some anti-Johnson credibility to take with him into the general election.
Labor will beat Truss like a drum.
