WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Republicans in Congress are lining up behind legislation that critics say would roll back protections for transgender people, setting a playbook for action on a divisive social issue should they take control of Congress this fall.
Republicans in the House of Representatives have introduced a bill that would block federal funding to colleges where transgender women are allowed to participate in sports with cisgender women. A separate bill would allow transgender people to sue medical personnel who helped them transition as minors.
Another bill would block funding to schools that disobey state laws regarding "materials harmful to minors," mimicking state laws that have been used to remove books discussing history around race and LGBT themes.
Critics say the legislation proposed by House Republicans would reduce access to care needed by transgender people to transition.
Advocates are pushing Democrats to do more to enshrine protections into law before the November elections, but they face uncertain prospects in the evenly divided Senate.
"If we lose the House or the Senate I think it's really unlikely we'll be able to prevent discrimination" at the federal level, said Fran Hutchins, executive director of Equality Federation.

Exactly what “protections” do these folks need?
Is not any physical assault against them a crime?
And, given that the right endures verbal abuse all the time, what is it about their little minds that causes them to have more protection that we normal people do?

So-called transgender people are mentally ill. They deserve our sympathy, not our encouragement.
Turned around one day at a Walmart and there stands a guy about 19, wearing a woman’s dress, stockings, women’s shoes and a necklace.
I had spoken to this guy before. I had no idea.
Why isn’t it pro woman, a positive thing for biological females, to have such legislation? The headline called this an anti-transgender push, apparently implying that this is some sort of backlash against civil rights?
And of course we are supposed to be liberal whenever anyone says something is an issue of equal rights, or civil rights.
I wonder how many of the actual biological females, are happy to compete in sports with biological males. We don’t hear much about that. I heard some reports that some of the girls were not happy with that man swimmer in their locker room, but it didn’t get much publicity.

Threatening fed funding withholding if somebody does not do what they want is a cancerous way to legislate.
Just end the damn funding, get the feds entirely out of education and let states do whatever they will.

A true transgender is not possible. Not now, not ever. The gender “male”, the XY chromosome pair, is literally inscribed in every cell nucleus of the individual’s body. Likewise, the gender “female”, the XX chromosome pair, is also inscribed in every cell nucleus of the individual’s body.
The only “transgenders” possible are for a male to become a neuter, by bodily mutilations and hormonal treatment, or for a female to become a neuter, also by bodily mutilations and hormonal treatment. Any other interpretation is delusional.
