Germany's climate plan: More bike lanes, no car speed limit

BERLIN -- The German government unveiled a new package of climate measures Wednesday to close the emissions gap in the transport and housing sectors as part of the country's plan to become carbon neutral by 2045.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing said his department planned to boost the installation of electric vehicle charging stations, expand public transport and build more bicycle lanes in the hopes that people will leave their gasoline-powered cars at home.

But Wissing, a member of the pro-business Free Democratic Party, said Germany would not be introducing a general highway speed limit that environmental activists have said would immediately cut emissions and lower the sky-high cost of fuel by reducing demand.

Bikes are the speed limit. Hitting them slows you down.

The problems for bicycles start with ICE.

With each one of these...there’s issues. For the enhanced bike ‘roads’, it only occurs in a highly urbanized area (Frankfurt, Hamburg...for example).

The charging stations? There are various charging stations in the middle nowhere today....where zero use gets made.

E-cars? Everyone who test-drives them...comes back impressed, but then starts to discuss range, charging cost in the future, and limited trust in the grid.

The speed limit discussion? Goes nowhere. Roughly a quarter of all autobahns already have a limit because of significant traffic flow, or safety conditions, or road-work being done. If you had a vote....fewer than a third of the country would support this.

Talking about more rail service? Tracks are mostly full right now, and suggesting that you’d double passengers by 2030 is a joke.

If Germany keeps going for the Green deal maybe the US could annex them when DJT gets back to work at the WH.

The faster you go, the less time you are on the road, the more gas you save. /s

Actually, a majority of the Autobahn now has what amounts to an 80mph speed limit. “De-restricted” segments of the autobahn are slowly being reduced in mileage.

They could build more railroads and subways. Never been to Germany but have been in Austria, Hungary and Switzerland. You can go most places by electric train and subway.

Matter of fact in urban areas it’s easier than taking a car. Just like in NYC and Washington, DC.

Couple these two forms of transportation with nuclear energy and you’ve solved most of the problem. And no new technology is needed.

Keep the cars we already have and just use them when you have to.

Much more practical when it’s relatively short distances between cities with dense populations.

The US is way too spread out.

People in that over-regulated, self-destructing nation would be more free and prosperous even as a Russian colony.
