Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, detailed his change of heart on abortion laws on Tuesday after GOP members of the committee pointed out his past desire to overturn Roe v. Wade.
At the committee’s hearing on legal concerns in a post-Roe America, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) submitted a copy of a letter Durbin wrote in 1989 in which he condemned “abortion on demand” and wrote, “I continue to believe the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade should be reversed.”
“The doomsday calls from those on the left are ignoring common sense,” Lee said. “They’re ignoring what human instinct tells us about protecting the most vulnerable among us. Members of this committee, including some who are now attacking the Dobbs decision, once shared these views.”

At the end of Tuesday’s hearing, Durbin told the committee and the panelists that the letter and his past views on abortion were not new but went on to explain how his mind had been changed on reproductive rights during a meeting with young people in Illinois.
“I sat down with two young women who were about to turn 18 — one a victim of incest, one a victim of rape — and they told me their stories. I didn’t ask them to, but they wanted to tell me. I left that meeting with a kind of understanding that I had never had before about the complexity of the decision behind the abortion procedure,” Durbin said.

There's an old saying: "Hard cases make bad law."
He’s totally lying. The base was tired of tolerating pro-life Dems, so he reinvented himself as an abortion activist. Hack politician to the very core.
Back in the day, he needed the Chicago Catholic vote.
Jokes on him, the damage of the Obama-Biden years will make actual black voters even more conservative.
A dollar says those women he mentions do not exist.
The circumstance of conception, however disgusting, is still not the baby’s fault.
Durbin’s a cuck.
He jumped on the pro-abortion bandwagon because of electoral politics. He wanted to run for the senate and he knew as a Democrat he could not get elected to the US Senate from Illinois if he was anti-abortion (as that is a statewide race). In the HOR he could get away with being pro-life, as his constituency back then was pretty moderate; but to win in a statewide election as a Democrat he’d need to be pro-abortion.
Durbin is just a snake.
He changed his attitude towards abortion to reflect the Democrats changes. In other words he has no core beliefs. Not surprising with a career politician.
Senator Durbin, young people need leadership not spineless

Time for a “fact check”. Who, when, where did he “sit down” with these girls who happened to insist they tell him their stories, that just happened to persuade him to flip-flop toward full support of the even-more-extremely-anti-life Democrat value system.
And quick as a hiccup babies were no longer people to dick durbin.
I think the modern term is that he ‘evolved’.
Also, Durbin has worked in government his entire adult life. He has never held a private-sector job.

Perhaps not. Being this is slimy Dick Durbin, it seems possible he is recalling two actual separate incidents where he advised in no uncertain terms that the young Congressional intern he was messing around with really needed to consider abortion. Like tomorrow. And don't tell anybody.
