National rail labor strike possible July 18 unless President Joe Biden intervenes

Railroad freight traffic across the United States could come to a screeching halt July 18 if progress isn’t made on a labor contract between national rail carriers and their unions.

Union officials stressed they do not want to go on strike, but argued they are being forced to consider the option in a bid to get better benefits, wages and staffing.

The unions have worked without a contract since July 1, 2019.

The two sides were forced into a 30-day “cooling off period” after failing to reach an agreement working through the National Mediation Board. The cooling off period prevents unions from striking or railroads from locking out their workers while they continue to negotiate.

That cooling off period ends at midnight on July 18, and a coalition of unions could choose to go on strike at that point, said Sheet Metal Air Rail Transportation union president Jeremy Ferguson.

However, the Railway Labor Act, which sets out the rules for these kinds of disputes, allows President Joe Biden to appoint a three-member emergency board to investigate and make recommendations to both sides about how to settle their differences.

The union is not allowed to strike during the Presidential Emergency Board’s investigation.

The main issues are wages and benefits.

Just a reminder, it was FDR that legalized labor unions in the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. I’m still looking for that one in the US constitution.

If a strike occurs, the entire supply chain is going to be crushed going into the November election. You won’t notice at first, but things will really start backing up by September.

Call me crazy or we’ll prepared. I have already done Christmas shopping for my grandchildren so they, at worst, have some kind of a Christmas. Who knows what ruin we will see this year.

Actually, the RR corps have been mistreating the RR workers. They’re working the crap out of them and reducing employees.

“Transportation Secretary Butty-gig has got this, no problem.”

Out of the many Secretaries of Transportation this nation has had over the decades, he may possibly be the worst qualified to head that Cabinet.

Zero level of confidence that he’ll be able to handle any of this. He really could not find his you know what without two hands and several aides to assist him.

Unions existed in the U.S. long before FDR and the NLR Act. But the Act did strengthened unions’ hands.

Like coal miners, their unions and the coal industry, railroad workers, their unions, and the rail history have a long and rather unhappy relationship. Memories are long and grudges are held on to.

I have no idea which side is in the right, but the idea that Joe is going to solve things is laughable.

Actually, the RR corps have been mistreating the RR workers. They’re working the crap out of them and reducing employees.

While wages they make may be quite adequate, working conditions including not knowing when you will be called for your next shift, disciplinary points for laying off for medical reasons or family emergency, and constant management inward camera monitoring make the job intolerable. Young persons with little seniority are quitting, older workers have to decide whether to put up with the new rules or loss pensions and most training classes lose members voluntarily well before completion.
