EV’s are not “clean” vehicles other than a lack of exhaust and noise. The making of EV’s is dirtier than ICE vehicles. The energy to charge EV’s is not clean either.
The only place EV’s make sense is highly populated cities where the traffic is so dense it causes air pollution you can see in the summer. It goes away in the winter. The cold does something to make it invisible.
In rural and suburban areas they make no sense at all.

In January 2020, I shopped around for a new Camry Hybrid. Within a 500-mile radius on cars.com, I found hundreds of models available for a test drive. Fast-forward to today, and there is ONE dealership within 500 miles that has the vehicle on its lot. One. And they want $5000 above sticker. Cars.com lists 128 models “available,” but 127 of those are stock photos where the car is on back-order with no guarantee of how long it will take to get the car.
We’re already at the point where getting a new car is very difficult and might as well be considered a luxury.
Gee, I wonder if that's the reason they want a lot of folks to move into downtown apartments and screw the suburbs.Most workplaces aren't located "downtown". It's not likely your 2nd or 3rd floor apartment will have electrical access to plug in your EV so you'll be taking long bus rides, then walk the rest of the way from the one size fits all bus stop to your job.

Another “nudging” factor to consider is the high tech going into vehicles these days so grease monkeying is almost impossible. If the gov cuts off maintenance and servicing facilities, most regular car owners are up a creek. Notice it is also happening with farm machinery which farmers are already fighting John Deere over. I imagine trucks are similar.
You forgot to mention monthly payments and the insurance (which I understand is a lot higher than on the gas auto you may have now) like our 1997 Ford. Paid for and insurance is very reasonable. Who’s got $4000 to install another electric outlet?

There is no question that “Big Brother” control is at the heart of the push for more EV’s. They are all connected to the web and can be remotely started and stopped. It won’t just be a matter of insufficient charging stations or lack of electric capacity. They will shut down your car if you are outside the allotted time or distance where they say you can drive. I have no doubt the government will have the capability to shut down any electric vehicle it wants. Hell, they can already shut down my gas powered pick-up using an app.
We need to buy old gas powered clunkers with no computer technology. Gas will become a black market commodity. Fortunately, I live where there is a fair amount of hydrocarbon production and gasoline can be made “off the grid.”
I truly think that is where we are headed.

And as I said, I'm comparing an EV to a new ICE car, not a used one. That's what I meant by: "if you're in the market for a new car anyway". Maybe if you took less "core" college courses in perpetual racial grievance mongering like the left pushes and took more courses in reading you would have picked up on that. So your 1997 Ford comparison doesn't apply. (For what it's worth, my wife and I have driven nothing but used cars for decades and was happy with it until the Dims made power, natural gas, and gasoline very expensive to force us to pay tithes to their warmageddon cult run by the Big Oil companies that love high energy costs. Believe it or not, you and I probably often speak the same language.)
"Who’s got $4000 to install another electric outlet?" Well, let's see. By driving on average ~200 miles/week I'd pay roughly $250 per month in gas if driving in ICE car (my wife and I usually drive the EV unless we have pickup chores). Instead the EV would add about $47/month to my power bill if I didn't have a solar system providing half of the power I need. Count it as saving $200/month for most people in gas alone (since most people don't have a large solar system to try to wean themselves off of Dim energy polices like I do). 20 months of that (less than 2 years for those of you in Rio Linda) and you have the $4K installation charge more than made up for. After that the gas savings and oil change savings pay for the difference in new EV vs comparable new ICE car. Keep in mind that I expect gas prices and oil change costs to rise by 3% inflation per year (I know, that's wishful thinking as long as we have the Dims cheating themselves into office). Basically, an EV saves you more on the 2nd year than it does the 1st year, then more savings the 3rd year, then more the 4th year, etc.
Now that I've answered your questions, let me ask you this. Do you believe like I do that Trump was wise in making our country almost completely energy independent? If so, then you understand my move to make my family almost completely energy independent. Thus, the converting my natural gas appliances to electric, installing a substantial solar array and battery storage, and getting an EV for most of our driving. I now have two fixed costs (car payment and HELOC payment I used to pay for solar) and one small variable cost (a small power bill) that replaced the highly variable costs that Obama and Biden increased bigly: power bill + natural gas bill + cost at the pump. My budget on the energy costs is like what it was in 2019 -- I basically have erased the past 3 years of energy inflation from my budget. The EV will be paid off in 4 years, the HELOC paid off in 10 to 11 years, and my budget will still operate like it costs as much to heat and cool this house and drive as much as we did in 2019, but at 2019 prices instead of 2032 prices. I wish I could erase how the Dims' energy policies inflate other costs too (i.e. food).
Another question: do you set aside money each month to a car savings account to repair and replace your used car with another used car? That's what we've done for years. I'm using that to pay part of the car payment. The remainder of the car payment comes from the HELOC each month. When the EV is paid off in 4 years I'll keep using the car "savings" allotment to pay down on the HELOC for an additional year. After that, the HELOC payment + tiny power bill will be lower than what I was paying in 2019 for power bill + natural gas bill + gas at the pump to drive ~200 miles/month. And as the HELOC payments pay down the HELOC balance, the HELOC payments go down. Thus as the years go by it'll cost me less money (HELOC payment) to save more money (avoiding most energy costs as costs continue to rise).
To Dims math is raaayyyysssssiisssst. To me math is truth second only to the Holy Bible.

I can jump in my 2003 V8 Tundra and drive 500 miles nonstop. In 5 minutes or so, I am ready to drive another 500. I often drive long trip across New Mexico, Texas and Colorado. A large number of them are in bitter cold weather and often snow.
Heat is free in my Tundra, parasited off the engine coolant.
Your heat is sapping your battery. Few things drain a battery faster than a heating element.
And the 97 Ford vs new EV is indeed a fair comparison, becuase it is a comparison into what is readily available. People do not need to accept your straw man that “if you are going to buy a new car anyway”.
EV is a very poor choice for most people compared to the alternatives. But if you have a backup gasoline pickup, have room for a small solar farm, live in a solar friendly part of the country, do not mind the fire hazard of charging a gigantic battery in your garage, etc... then it’s fine with me.
But as national policy, it’s pure idiocracy, drive by emotion, at the global warming cult that has replaced religion in America.
The solution to all of the problems with EV’s is ... wait for it.....the ICE!!!!
I consider the internal combustion engine to be one of mankind’s greatest inventions. Looks like myself and the ICE will fade out at about the same time.
So while we’re using all that “real and correct” information maybe you could throw in the part about the business of battery construction and re-cycling being the dirtiest business on the planet. How is it that is never mentioned in the benefits of EV’s? And don’t fail to mention the increase in your home insurance from the increased risk of fire in your garage? Or the cost of a detached garage to protect your house? Somewhere in there should be the cost of the replacement battery. I can buy a lot of five dollar gas for the cost of a 10,000 dollar battery.
