Road Trip: Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base and census-designated place just east of Dayton, Ohio, in Greene and Montgomery counties. It includes both Wright and Patterson Fields, which were originally Wilbur Wright Field and Fairfield Aviation General Supply Depot. Patterson Field is approximately 10 miles northeast of Dayton; Wright Field is approximately 5 miles northeast of Dayton.

The host unit at Wright-Patterson AFB is the 88th Air Base Wing (88 ABW), assigned to the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center and Air Force Materiel Command. The 88 ABW operates the airfield, maintains all infrastructure and provides security, communications, medical, legal, personnel, contracting, finance, transportation, air traffic control, weather forecasting, public affairs, recreation and chaplain services for more than 60 associate units.

The 88th Air Base Wing is comprised of more than 5,000 officers, enlisted, Air Force civilian and contractor employees. The Wing reports to Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, a major development and acquisition product center of the Air Force Materiel Command.

The 445th Airlift Wing flies the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. the C-17 is capable of delivering troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area.

The mission of the 445th Airlift Wing is to provide strategic transport of personnel and equipment worldwide and to provide aeromedical evacuation. The wing accomplishes this task by recruiting and training personnel to attain and maintain operational readiness. The wing is composed of nearly 2000 airmen, approximately separated into 250 officers and 1700 enlisted personnel. To facilitate day-to-day operations the wing employs approximately 350 Air Reserve Technicians who work full-time for the unit.

The 655th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Wing is an Independent wing under the 10th Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The organization officially became a wing Sept. 20, 2018, consisting of two Groups and 14 Classic Associate Unit intelligence squadrons across seven different states conducting 10 distinct missions.

We got a little rain Saturday but need much more. At least we got enough to keep things going for a short time. MIGHT get a little more tomorrow evening and we’re keeping fingers crossed for luck.
At least the temps backed off a bit the past couple of days.

A Teachable Spirit

Read: Proverbs 1:1–7

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance. Proverbs 1:5

It has become sadly “normal” to attack not only the opinions of others but also the person holding the opinion. This can be true in academic circles as well. For this reason, I was stunned when scholar and theologian Richard B. Hays wrote a paper that forcefully took to task a work that he himself had written years earlier! In Reading with the Grain of Scripture, Hays demonstrated great humility of heart as he corrected his own past thinking, now fine-tuned by his lifelong commitment to learning.   

As the book of Proverbs was being introduced, King Solomon listed the various intents of this collection of wise sayings. But in the midst of those purposes, he inserted this challenge, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” (Proverbs 1:5). Like the apostle Paul, who claimed that, even after following Christ for decades, he continued to pursue knowing Jesus (Philippians 3:10), Solomon urged the wise to listen, to learn, and to continue to grow.

No one is ever hurt by maintaining a teachable spirit. As we seek to continue to grow and learn about the things of faith (and the things of life), may we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth (John 16:13), that we might better comprehend the wonders of our good and great God. — Bill Crowder
