Illegal immigrants who mow the lawns and paint the mansions of wealthy Hamptons residents are being forced to live in hovels hidden in the woods due to the sky-high cost of residing in the summer playground of celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Joel and Jay-Z and Beyoncé, The Post has learned.
Squalid encampments exist around the tony town of Southampton, including just off the main highway and in the waterfront village of Westhampton Beach.
“I work for very rich people in the Hamptons but I can’t afford somewhere to live,” lamented Juan Antonio Morales, 40.
“I am paid very little and an apartment costs too much money.”
The Post found the native Guatemalan spread out on a tattered chaise lounge in a heavily wooded area behind an abandoned gas station along the Montauk Highway in Westhampton Beach last week — as Aston Martins, Mercedes-Benzes and Range Rovers buzzed past nearby.
Morales said he’d spent most of the day hanging out at a nearby 7-Eleven store where contractors pick up day laborers to work off the books.

Start naming names.
Let’s send him back to Guatemala.
District 9
Well, there workers have to live somewhere and they don’t seem to want to build them housing so I guess they figured out a way to survive nearby.
Quit and move.
I say send the celebrities to Guatemala.

How their hired help live.
“Let’s send him back to Guatemala.”
Yes, likely he’ll be able to afford a place to live there.
No it sounds like they hire contractors who pay these people off the books
“District 9”
Really enjoyed that movie. The guy was great in it. I don’t remember it well but my recollections is that it was rather lefty, but very cleverly done.

Anyone that knows the area knows this is a BS sob story.
That’s fine, Make sure it is in a baby seat.
“Rich progressive celebrities paying migrant workers “off the books” (likely below minimum wage). Never heard that before.”
The migrant workers are hired by contractors, not by the homeowners, who mostly can’t speak Spanish.
The migrant worker chose to be where he is. As a migrant, he can head south.
I laughed quite hard in that movie.
It was good.
Apartments on southern Long Island seem to start around $2,000/month and can easily be over $3,000/month.
That’s a lot of money for a single person, but split two ways it is about 80 hours of $15/hour work per person.
Remember renters have a nation full of choices.
A working man as William Jennings Bryan said is a business person too.
Gross pay - taxes - rent - commute cost = net profit
If the gross pay is high enough, paying half of it for rent can make for an optimal bottom line.
It is rare for ilictos to be homeless.
Rooms in houses are often let out by Hispanic homeowners.
You assume they're making $15 per hour. They might be making well below minimum wage.
Hear hear. Go home.
In addition to your point...
This day-laborer is being shrewd by soliciting near the properties. Contractors will commute upwards of an hour (or two) to get to those locations.
