The United States is fighting a proxy war in Ukraine against Russian aggression, and we’re not doing it on the cheap. The Biden administration announced on Friday that we were sending another $400 million in military aid to Ukraine. This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed victory over the eastern Luhansk region last week.
Putin jumped the gun a little, although Russian troops hold the upper hand throughout most of the region. The problem for Putin is that those pesky Ukrainians refuse to surrender. And the United States is making their continuing resistance possible by giving Kyiv high-powered weapons to fight with.
To date, we’ve spent $8 billion in military assistance to the Ukrainian army with tens of billions of dollars in military hardware in the pipeline. Congress authorized $54 billion in military and other aid to Ukraine — some of which went to our NATO allies to help us defend Kyiv.
And therein lies the problem. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, NATO countries have not increased their military expenditures since Russia invaded Ukraine.

What they're doing is comparing the amount of foreign aid only. They are ignoring completely all the cost of all the troops in Afghanistan.
The Russians renamed Liberty Plaza. It is now Lenin Plaza. When Mariupol fell, the Russians immediately made propaganda vids about how they were welcomed and how they were restoring infrastructure. But in the first weeks they changed Ukrainian names to Russian names on street signs even though some streets had no usable buildings left. Lenin statues have also been restored in plazas. Communism’s attraction was never economics for those in power. It was a system of maintaining power. Putin has been the main power broker since Yeltsin. He changed the constitution to stay in power. His net worth is over 1000 times that of Zelensky (via Forbes and Elon Musk). Obama’s promised flexibility to Russia became a reality.

My wife is sick that her hometown of Alchevsk is temporarily occupied by invader criminals from the far reaches of the Russian empire. She cannot understand why any American does not understand that Russia is an enemy of America. Putin said, “Russia knows no borders”.

That is not true. Some have not, but many did.
That $40 billion separate authorization in the USA was an unplanned increase. Germany authorized a big current year increase, and suddenly set themselves to meet the 2% of GDP NATO target, for the first time in many decades. The UK has authorized significant new money this year. Forget about Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - they have pretty much pulled out all the budgetary stops. Poland is signing a contract for 500 HIMARS, for goodness sake.
