UN says Ukraine bears share of blame for nursing home attack

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two weeks after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February, Kremlin-backed rebels assaulted a nursing home in the eastern region of Luhansk. Dozens of elderly and disabled patients, many of them bedridden, were trapped inside without water or electricity.

The March 11 assault set off a fire that spread throughout the facility, suffocating people who couldn’t move. A small number of patients and staff escaped and fled into a nearby forest, finally getting assistance after walking for 5 kilometers (3 miles).

In a war awash in atrocities, the attack on the nursing home near the village of Stara Krasnyanka stood out for its cruelty. Ukrainian authorities placed the fault squarely on Russian forces, accusing them of killing more than 50 vulnerable civilians in a brutal and unprovoked attack.

But a new U.N. report has found that Ukraine’s armed forces bear a large, and perhaps equal, share of the blame for what happened in Stara Krasnyanka, which is about 580 kilometers (360 miles) southeast of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. A few days before the attack, Ukrainian soldiers took up positions inside the nursing home, effectively making the building a target.

I lost respect for the pathetic UN decades ago; but to assign blame equally when they have just admitted that Ukraine used civilians (in this case disabled ones) as human shields which is absolutely a war crime according to the Geneva conventions. And once a combatant does that the site becomes a legitimate target according to those same conventions. So for them to make this assertion is just more evidence that they have no integrity.

“The report by the U.N.’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights doesn’t conclude the Ukrainian soldiers or the Moscow-backed separatist fighters committed a war crime. But it said the battle at the Stara Krasnyanka nursing home is emblematic of the human rights office’s concerns over the potential use of “human shields” to prevent military operations in certain areas.”

No, he wasn't.

Ukraine was already told they wouldn't be admitted to NATO.

Everyone knew this.

That's why Russia attacked.

They knew NATO wouldn't respond.

Perhaps they wouldn't have asked to join if Russia wasn't a threat.

Giving autonomy to Donbas would have had to go to a countrywide referendum and they wouldn't have supported giving their resource rich industrial home to Russia.

This is about oil, gas, warm water ports and Russian imperialism.

Now, it's a proxy war and innocent Ukrainians are paying the cost.

Yep, and in both cases the Western Media knows what’s happening, and is COVERING UP for the Ukrainians and Palestinians.

Perhaps that is why some people here are openly supporting Ukraine (hard to think of any other reason) - they actually TRUST the media.

Now that the UN is getting fed up with this crap, perhaps that will get those people to look a bit harder at just who they’re supporting.

Activists of the Orange Revolution were funded and trained in tactics of political organisation and nonviolent resistance by Western pollsters and professional consultants who were partly funded by Western government and non-government agencies but received most of their funding from domestic sources. [2] [150] According to The Guardian, the foreign donors included the U.S. State Department and USAID along with the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, the International Republican Institute, the NGO Freedom House and George Soros's Open Society Institute. [151] The National Endowment for Democracy has supported democracy-building efforts in Ukraine since 1988.

https://everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/ukraine

So all of the below groups funded and/or trained Orange Revolution Activists.

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs - https://www.ndi.org/board-directors Current board members include Stacey Abrams and Donna Brazille.

International Republican Institute - https://www.iri.org/who-we-are/ - Current Board members include Lindsey Graham, Dan Sullivan, Tom Cotton(disappointing) and none other than John Mccain stepped down as chariman and Dan Sullivan replaced him. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Republican_Institute - (The IRI received $550,000 from the National Endowment for Democracy in 2009) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Republican_Institute#2009_Honduran_constitutional_crisis - Let's read that again. The IRI(repubs) received $550,000 from NED(dems)

Freedom House - https://freedomhouse.org/about-us/board-and-leadership/board-trustees-member-biographies#Chertoff - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_House#Relationship_with_the_U.S._government

George Soros's Open Society Institute - no comment

The National Endowment for Democracy - https://www.ned.org/about/board-of-directors/ -

NED is a grant-making foundation, distributing funds to private non-governmental organizations for promoting democracy abroad in around 90 countries. Half of NED's funding is allocated annually to four main U.S. organizations: the American Center for International Labor Solidarity (ACILS, associated with the AFL–CIO), the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE, affiliated with the United States Chamber of Commerce), the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI, associated with the Democratic Party), and the International Republican Institute (IRI, formerly known as the National Republican Institute for International Affairs and affiliated with the Republican Party).[21] The other half of NED's funding is awarded annually to hundreds of non-governmental organizations based abroad which apply for support.[22] In 2011, the Democratic and Republican Institutes channelled around $100 million a year through the NED.[14] Source of funding

The NED receives an annual appropriation from the U.S. budget (it is included in the chapter of the Department of State budget destined for the U.S. Agency for International Development-USAID) and is subject to congressional oversight even as a non-governmental organization.[23]

Read that again. NED gets it's money from congress and gives it to these other NGOs who's boards include members of congress(do the NGOs pay board members??). Dem NGOs, Repub NGOs and Soros' Open Society all worked together to fund and train Orange Revolution Activists

It's a club and you ain't in it

A must read: CEO/President of the NED - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damon_Wilson NED is pretty much the head of this NGO Hydra. Damon Wilson lives in DC with his husband.

“Ukraine was already told they wouldn’t be admitted to NATO.”

Means NOTHING to Russia, as the Western lies to Russia started in the 1990s and have not stopped (even Bush-43 admitted to lying to Russia when he got phone-scammed a month or two ago). Then you couple that with the Neocon takeover of Ukraine, and it was OBVIOUS to Russia what the future was if nothing was done about it.

So, in hindsight, if the West REALLY didn’t want this war, it was going to take far more than a few words to convince Russia.

As to the resources in Donbass, I’m sure Russia doesn’t mind acquiring them, but that was FAR from the proximate cause.

The newly found, huge oil and gas deposits in Donbas and to the west were being actively developed.

Ukraine was going to stop transporting Russian oil and gas and sell their own to Europe, undercutting Russia's price and ending their monopoly of selling energy to Europe.

This would have destroyed Russia's economy.

The globalists that control the Europe and the US are evil, so is Russia.

Ukraine is just a chew toy, fought over by 2 pit bulls.

Thank you for that iron clad documentation on the funding. It’s no surprise that John Brennan visited Ukraine at the beginning of this war. He was involved, as director of the CIA, directly with the killing of the 100 in Maidan massacre in 2014. It’s so disgusting.

If the oil was so important, then why do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to also provoke a war there? Why not, instead, simply settle and give Donbass limited autonomy (obviously ruling out NATO too), or at least agree to that, and then see what Russia does.

If Russia did still attack, then I would likely be on your side.

But that didn’t fit the Neocon agenda, so here we are.

And you also have to understand the Globalist/Neocon agenda, which is to LOCK UP oil/gas reserves, not develop them. The problem for the Neocons/Globalists is that they MUST control those resources, in order to lock them down.

Here in Texas, Biden is now in the process of shutting down the largest oil/gas field in the country (40% of the country’s oil production), the Permian Basin, and of course look at what he’s doing on federal lands.

Russia will sell the resources on the world market, an INDEPENDENT Ukraine would do the same - but a Neocon-controlled Ukraine will not be permitted to do so.

Prior to the Russian engagement in Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and offered him membership in NATO.
This was a provocative move by the Biden Administration because the treaty negotiated during the Clinton Administration with Russia and the U.S. and UK declared Ukraine would be a neutral country. So obviously the Biden Administration are warmongers.

Ukraine began becoming a de facto part of NATO in 2014 and after when NATO began training 10k UFA soldiers a year and engaging in exercises with NATO states. There were also arms shipments and money given for the military by NATO countries. That’s how the poorest, most corrupt country in Europe came to have the second largest army in Europe (after Turkey). It was an army that was also thought to be formidable because of its size, equipment, and training. As for the claim that Ukraine was barred from joining NATO, that’s nonsense. Ukraine was edging that way, and Z’s comments about joining and re-nuclearizing occurred in the run up to the SMO.

It seems the usual Neocon shills are now conceding that it’s a “proxy war”, but are trying to somehow convince people that it is the Russians who are using Ukraine as a proxy. The Ukraine, now called “Ukraine”, is merely a set of lines drawn by the old Bolsheviks in 1921 or so. It was just an administrative unit made up of various ethnic groups - Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, Hungarians, and others - that had NO prior national identity. Like the former Yugoslavia, this recently created agglomeration of disparate groups coexisted reasonably well until the US/NATO/Neocon cabal decided to intervene in furtherance of the Neocon/WEF/Soros messianic vision of a unipolar, Neoliberal, Globohomo world order.

The Covidiots and Neocon apologists here need to be bitch slapped. I’ve never seen such invincible ignorance and mendacity on FR.
