Why Johnson fell but Trump remains his party's de facto leader ... for now
CNN ^ | 7/7/2022 | Stephen Collinson

(CNN) — Britain's Conservatives just did what America's Republicans never dared to do.

They toppled a wrecking ball right-wing populist leader who reeled from one self-created scandal to another and who was accused of flagrantly breaking the law, abusing power and building his political career on an edifice of lies.

After weeks of clinging desperately to office, Boris Johnson finally resigned as the ruling Conservative Party's leader Thursday after a rebellion by his own lawmakers. The party will elect a new leader, who, according to the customs of Britain's parliamentary system, will become prime minister. America's Republican Party, however, never turned on Donald Trump in the same way -- despite his far more ruinous offenses against democracy than Johnson's. It's not that Republicans didn't have the chance. The ex-President was impeached twice, but most GOP senators chose not to vote to convict him of high crimes and misdemeanors last year -- a step that could have barred him from future federal office.

“He was toppled for his dishonesty in holding parties during COVID restrictions (dishonest and entitled behavior) and then upped the ante by lying about it initially.”

May 2020 - lockdown restriction violations by Cummings
May 2021 - funding for redecorating 10 Downing St questioned
December 2021 - Frost resignation over Brexit lawlessness
May 2022 - lockdown party violations (lawlessness)
June 2022 - Pincher accusations of groping men

Al Jazeera seems to think it was the last one that really put him over the top - Johnson’s perceived support for Pincher making it (I guess) impossible to support Johnson in a general election. It is remarkable to me, looking at all this, how little it takes to remove an elected leader with national credentials.

“Say what you want about Trump, he always, always danced with who brung him. “

Bingo.

Boris Johnson only superficially resembled Donald Trump, but his thrust of political leanings were far different. Yes, BoJo was and probably still is a populist, but he represented a far different popular stance, in that Britons are habituated to being at heart left-of-center, while Americans are center-right in their outlook.

So a populist American leader is still much to the right of a populist British leader.

“ Boris Johnson right wing? Hardly.”

CNN repaying the word, Republican, in there like clowns. Like Daffy Duck. It doesn’t mean the same thing over there. CNN knows that.

Anyway, Johnson renounced Trump. CNN wishing the grass roots would reject Trump this way. Not understanding why they haven’t yet done so.

They’re clueless.

First off, he didn't fall, he resigned.

Yogi Berra's 'It ain't over 'til it's over', true in baseball as in life. British political system is rather strange, because Boris could throw his name into the hopper, be selected and then have a new mandate.

While he is a hypocrite by his actions in Britain's lockdowns, he is still very popular with the people, so I hear.

Dear CNN I would like to help you out but when you start with a lie you will never find the correct answer.

PS - using Democrat talking points does not help either.

Johnson was long seen as a vote-winning machine. He was the talismanic figure who won a referendum in 2016 that led to Britain’s exit from the European Union.>>> From the article this is a lie. He oversaw the exit that the people voted for and the prior PM failed to deliver.

Most GOP lawmakers understand they must effectively support, enable and shield Trump if they want a future political career because of his magnetic hold over the Republican base.>>> Like magic, When a politician delivers on his promises and helps create prosperity people tend to want that to continue.

Not with the working class. They thought they might have found their Trump. Then they realized he wasn’t at all.

Savage has an article on this, that BoJo was targeted by his right hand man Salawahi (Iraqi) to be brought down and place himself as PM.
