(CNN)Rep. Liz Cheney has become an unexpected hero for Democrats. She was one of the few Republicans to vote to impeach President Donald Trump last year, has served as one of his most vocal critics in the GOP and is the vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol.
But we shouldn't mistake adoring press coverage and bipartisan bona fides for popularity in the place where popularity matters most for Cheney: Wyoming. A look at the data reveals that Cheney should be regarded as the clear underdog in her efforts to retain her seat.
Polling from Wyoming is limited, but what does exist paints an ominous picture. The Cooperative Election Study (CES), a large academic survey, asks Americans whether they approve or disapprove of their member of Congress.
The sample sizes in each district are usually in the lower 100s or fewer, though the trend is illuminative. Cheney sported a 72% disapproval rating in the late 2021 edition of the survey, which was fielded about 10 months after she voted to impeach Trump. That was up nearly 40 points from her 26% disapproval rating in the late 2020 version, which was fielded before Cheney's vote. All told, Cheney was the least popular member of Congress in the 2021 survey.

“She won’t lose her primary, or won’t run as an independent?”
A. Yes she will lose the primary.
B. No she won’t run as an independent because she can’t.
Wyoming, like most states, has a Sore Loser Law which means that someone losing a primary cannot run independently in the general election.
She’s toast.
“...and she’s a goner.”
👍
Bro, you nailed it.
Beltway dynasties have spent the last 50 years establishing an unelected class of ruling masters laundering billions and billions like their personal piggy bank. Trump is an existential threat to 50 years hard work. He threatens it all. These elites need more Biden like more cow bell. They need Trump like a shot to the head.
For destroying the Clinton and Bush dynasties, Trump deserves our thanks. Now it looks like the Cheney dynasty is gone too.
She is not alone, 145 of the GOP House voted for her in Feb 2021.
Thanks, great news.
Bush and Cheney probably both hate Trump. Liz is Daddy's girl.
She knows exactly how this will play out:
1. Knowing she’s out in January, she’ll create as much havoc for Trump as possible before then.
2. After January, get a gig on CNN or MSNBC leading up to the ‘24 primaries, which will keep her ranting about Trump for another full year.
3. Run for president, knowing the media and the Republican elite will ensure her a spot on the stage for the debates against Trump.
4. After losing the primary, finishing out the general election as an “election special commentator” on CNN or MSNBC.
5. After the 2024 election, take a cushy job on a corporate board and enjoy the high life.
This bitch ain’t worried at all…
“But Hageman pulled in nearly $650,000 of her total from Wyoming donors, more than twice as much as Cheney’s in-state haul (about $270,000).”
Cheney is like the rest of the uniparty. She represents Washington D.C., not her constituents.
She raised $930,000 from out of state and $270,000 from Wyoming. Three times as much money from non-Wyoming sources as from Wyoming. So who does she actually represent?
“:^)
“I wish her Dad would take her hunting with him.“
Too bad Ted Kennedy isn’t around to give her a driving tour of Chappaquiddick.
With those disapproval numbers? No way.
