The co-creator of Friends has said it was a mistake not to use appropriate pronouns for Chandler Bing’s transgender parent in the hit 90s sitcom.
Marta Kauffman, 65, said she now regrets the representation of the character Amanda Bing, who was played by Kathleen Turner.
“We kept referring to her as Chandler’s father, even though Chandler’s father was trans,” she said in an interview with The Conversation on the BBC World Service, which will be broadcast on 11 July.
“Pronouns were not yet something that I understood. So we didn’t refer to that character as she. That was a mistake.”
Kauffman co-created Friends with David Crane in 1994. The show, which ran for a decade, followed the lives of six friends living in Manhattan, New York, and earned tens of millions of dollars in syndication and streaming for its creators and cast.

A comedy, even as mild a comedy as “Friends”, could not be produced today because it would offend some group or another. And forget about an overtly edgy comedy like “Seinfeld” where it skewered everyone and anything.
We’ve entered the Grievance Age.
yes, same Hollywood weirdo. She is on a woke kick.
The thing is, though, if people would stop paying for worthless subscription services, they would be forced to make things people are either willing to buy or watch - otherwise they make no money. Even broadcast networks that run commercials get a lot of cash even if no one watches if they are carried by a subscription service that pays them retransmission fees per subscriber and ratings become less of a factor. It amazes me the number of people who pay for subscription services to watch things that are available for free, or they don’t watch anything on them very often but continue to shell out hundreds if not thousands of dollars per year on something they could easily do without and easily replace with something that costs nothing to them.
There's a simple solution: if it offends you, turn it off!
This is just pandering nonsense.
I'd be OK with that.
Let’s see…Friends….
Basically, a lefty “funny”
Soap opera full of;
1) Queers are better and stable
Parents (think Ross’ wife.
2) it’s totes cool for you to leave your spouse for someone else of your own gender and then have them push the stroller of the child yoh had with your spouse up the aisle to be part of the “wedding.”
3) Tons and tons of premarital and extramarital sex. Marriage is meaningless and easily skipped or gotten rid of.
4) Ridiculous living arrangements
5) Easy Peasy surrogacy
Why on earth did any conservative ever like this show?
fixed it for ya.
i think most folks watch tv for the entertainment.
They probably do not pay attention to the stuff you have a problem with.
#27 Why on earth did any conservative ever like this show?
Jennifer Anistons er... headlights.
On my own, and left to my ideals, I’d probably cave to whatever sick fodder is presented. But I’m not the one who came up with the standard to live by. You’d have to take that up with the Creator.
Make things palatable until they are accepted and then rev up to the next level. That’s the pattern. just pretend like it doesn’t irk your conscience until you have none left.
So, where having no morals is praised, no morals exist.
Not surprised that their presentation of a mentally sick human is now being redefined as not twisted enough.
“After pledging $4 million to Brandeis University over “guilt” about the lack of racial diversity on “Friends,” co-creator Marta Kauffman is now expressing regret over how the show represented another demographic: transgender people.”
Pretty expensive mistake eh?
“What??? Glad i never watched the show”
Oh, I thought it was great and a constant point of consternation and embarrassment for Chandler. Incidentally, Chandler’s mom was played by hottie Morgan Fairchild, and “Dad” the Drag Queen was played by Kathleen Turner.
They are apologizing because they did it just right back in the day.
if you buy into their psychosis then you’re already screwed
It wasn’t even a universal thing amongst trans back then.
